Question about Timonen

Hey Preds fans. Forgive my ignorance but i was just wondering if anyone here could just help me to understand what type of player Kimmo Timonen is. I have never seen him play on TV in the NHL but was fortunate enough to see the Finland vs Russia game and he seemed to be playing a very good defensive game.

My question: Is Timonen an above average defensive player? i know he can score but does he hold his own in the defensive end cause he doesn't seem to get rated by NHL fans on the NHL talk board when they are talking about best defensemen but he looked impressive to me in the Finns game thats for sure!

Go Preds!

Wow, welcome to our board, APF! I have a very good friend in Perth, which I know is on the other side of the continent..but...still :)

Timonen- Outstanding offensive instincts, tremendous passer, decent shot when he gets it on net(not as much as we'd like, this year). He's not a physical defenseman, and if it comes down to a strength battle, he can be exposed. However, his defensive brain is very good. He knows the right play to make usually, and is great at reading and breaking up the pass, making him a valuable penalty killer. I would definitely classify him as an "Offensive Defenseman," but he's more than competent in his own end.

Hope that helps!
