All figured out!

I was reading that Gonchar is on the block. They want to move him to dump salary. He onlyk makes 3.5 (approx). The Oilers could easily handle that salary!! What could we offer up for him?

Smith, Lynch
for
Gonchar

????

Would that do it? We'd only be adding about a million in salary, and the Caps would get their defensive minded players at a better rate! Perhaps we would have to include a bit more... something like a third?

LoudmouthHemskyFan#2 10-27-2003 07:03 AM

IMO we would have to give up alot more than that...gonchar is an elite dman in the NHL...i dont think that smith and lynch would come anywear near getting him...

Mr Sakich 10-27-2003 07:11 AM

this is not based on any inside info, just opinion but....

Assuming there is a long strike/lock-out, the oiler owners are going to lose a lot of money next year. I am pretty sure they have told lowe that a 5-8 million dollar profit this year is attianable and would be very important to the long term viability of the team.

I don't think there is any chance that lowe will trade for any 3.5 mill players this year.

Ahem. Unless that player could be the difference between making the playoffs and missing them. Gonchar is that type of player. I wouldn't trade Jason Smith though, we still need toughness back there. But Brewer...I would do that. Gonchar is a proven commodity. He would instantly put our PP into the top 10 teams in the league IMO.
Also, Washington's d situation is pretty bad. Brewer would fit well into a rebuilding scheme for them. They lose some payroll, 1M bucks, and get a much heralded defenseman with size and loads of potential. There aren't too many teams willing to trade a young guy like Brewer so the Oilers would be in a good position to negotiate with Washington.

Gonchar
for
Brewer and 2nd rnd 2004

windowlicker 10-27-2003 08:26 AM

Brewer + for Gonchar?

Lowe would do that in a Milisecond.

Gonchar would be a monster in the west, and seeing him in Oiler blue would bring a tear to my eye.

Brewer + Rita/Chimera for Gonchar?

I'd hate to trade Brew but getting Gonchar would be tight.

But I have my doubts that Gonchar is on the block. Prob Kolzig and Lang more likley but maybe Gonchar could be had. You gotta figure if he is, that almost every team in the league would be trying to get him. So we might have to overpay.

Just a side note. Gonchar is turning 30 next year. I'm not entirely sure of his contract status but if he is anywhere near UFA then this thread has no potential at all. Gonchar in this salary structure could get ridiculous.

thome_26 10-27-2003 10:33 AM

sorry people. Brewer would be a terrible over-payment for a UFA to be (If it isn't this offseason it's next, depending on the CBA). Smith/Staios would be the only Dmen that might interest the Caps and that Lowe would be willing to move for Gonchar. I think perhaps this would work:
Smith, Chimera, Lynch, third
for
Gonchar

I bet that'd get their attention!

While I would definitely love Gonchar in Oiler silks, his contract makes it very tough to pick him up. He makes $3.45 million and his contract expires in 2004. He was born in April 1974, making him 30 years old this year.

I would trade Jason Smith ($2.3 million) and a pick/ prospect (Rita - $1 million) for Gonchar and see if he would sign a contract for $4 million per year for two more years.

GONCHAR FITS BEAUTIFULLY in the Oilers salary structute. This year and after a new CBA. If he can be signed for 4M bucks, let's remember that he's basically a pp specialist and not of the same callibre as Lidstrom or Pronger, for a few years it works out great. Remember that Salo enters the first club-option year on his contract next season at 4M per...LOL. No way that will be picked up to the dough saved there could easily pay for a top d-man like Gonchar. Of course, It all depends on the Caps willingness to trade him, and the chances of signing him long term.
I'm sick of paying 4M bucks for a BAD goalie. The kind of money should only go to tenders that win games on their own on a consistant basis. Other teams are getting by just fine with goalies making 1.2-2.5 Million.

Imagine Hemsky and Gonchar running our PP point*drool*. Hemsky giving Gonchar those sweet feeds for those huge one-timers of his. :D

Um... how did this get to Salo? Gonchar right? Even if we could trade for another netminder, I wouldn't want to cut corners at the goalie position to be honest. I expect to pay our #1 netminder $4 million, whoever it is.

LawnDemon 10-27-2003 12:48 PM

get over it guys. there is no way that lowe will ever trade for a pending free agent. especially not a "high profile" pending free agent.

as far as brewer for gonchar? are you all nuts? trading anything more than prospects and picks for pending free agents is crazy talk.

with that in mind, if Lowe wanted gonchar for a season (all anyone will get from a pending free agent) he could probably land him for rita and a 3rd... or less.
