Remember 2002...

the first round series vs boston, in game 4 zednik got hit badly by mclaren and he would end up missing the rest of the series, the bruins tied the series at 2 heading back to boston for game 5, the team rallied and ended up winning games 5 and 6 to take the series.

It strangely looks like that this year eh?

ChemiseBleuHonnete 04-29-2006 11:30 AM

It was the bruins and they had Byron Dafoe in the nets. Enough said.

Do I really care?! the bruins were no 1 seed at the time and the team this year is way better than the team we had back in 2002.

Is Cam Ward Ken Dryden now? I really hope he's not getting into the players' heads the way he is getting into the heads of fans. He is not that great a goalie. When a goalie faces 25 shots a nigh, 20 of them from the point, he's going to stop most of them.

We need traffic in front of the net, we need more hustle, we need Steve Begin.

Freaky Habs Fan 04-29-2006 11:46 AM

I think those two losses will boost the team a little bit. We have obviously played or worst game of the series yesterday so it might be a good thing. We will have to see but we will have to cover Huet a little bit more because they were all over him yesterday.

Anyways, Begin will be back on Sunday so it's a good thing!

Cariboux 04-29-2006 12:29 PM

It reminds me a lot the Habs-Hurricanes series... We were about to lead the series 3 to 1 but we choked in the 3rd and they won the next games... Now, we were in position to lead 3-0 but they came back in the 3rd and won the next game... If we loose the next game, it will be just too hard for our guys. We can't score 6 goals each games and we will need offense to win 2 other games against these guys.

Refresher: 1996: The Montreal Canadiens go into Broadway and steal two games away from the favoured Rangers. The Rangers come back to Montreal and defeat the Habs in 2 games to take home ice advantage back. In 2002, the Bruins and Habs split the first 4 games with each winning a game in the other's building. How was this trolling? A little sensitive?

Trolls don't destroy flawed arguments with logic and facts.

to busy coming on the habs board for some reason...

Funny, you falsely accuse of trolling and then start with baiting and flaming comments. That is when you know the argument is lost. You cannot stick to the topic at hand.

for a break from reality. I like the purple sky in habland.

BTW, this is hfboards.com, not the Habs board and exclusive to habs fans. I saw the thread, looked for the similarities being pointed out; noticed it was not really similar at all, but seemed familiar; pointed out why and got attacked.

true but in 1996 we had no coach, no team...we made the playoffs with 90pts that year but with tremblay as coach we had no chance from the begining we also had thibault in net and he was horrible.

MacDaddy TLC* 04-29-2006 04:29 PM

1996 stats: http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/leagues/seasons/teams/0000451996.html

Some nice talent on the team, countered by a dolt named Tremblay

2002 team:
http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/leagues/seasons/teams/0000452002.html

lunch pail gang with a so-so coach (I originally thought it was Vigneault, but it was Therrien so I changed solid to so-so)

this year's team would be somewhere in between talent-wise, but with stronger coaching.

We actually had a good team that year. Turgeon, Recchi, a young Bure and Koivu, Damphousse, Rucinsky when he was good, and a slew of other useful players were part of our lineup. Our coach at the time was Mario Tremblay, a hotheaded geyser if there ever was one...he was better tactically than Therrien though. We also finished with 90 pts, pretty good considering that there were no OTLs or shootout wins.

MacDaddy TLC* 04-29-2006 04:35 PM

I guess the similarity hoped for is the return of Koivu (and hoping he gets the chance this year). In 2002 he had an incredible 10 points in 12 games after returning from battling cancer. The guy is amazing. Almost Mario Lemieux amazing when it comes to his resiliency.

Yep, the bandwagoner Rangers fan ( ;) ) is right. Except that 1996 was 1996 and 2006 is 2006. It's a whole new series. We had more than 80% to get through round 1 after game 2. Now, I guess it's down to somewhere around 50%...

But, in the end, games have to be played, not simulated based on past history.

And what I know for sure is that the Habs won't get away with this one if they play like they did yesterday. Huet is plain right, they've got to disturb Cam Ward a lot more. Even in the unclassy way. Don't avoid him when he's the first on the puck behind his net. It will be a penalty, but he's a kid. Afraid him ! They had the Swiss cheese with Gerber. I want Cam Ward to be compared to a Canadian golf course. Superb grass but 18 holes !

Edit : Back to the trolling comments. Leaf fans here are showing that they are not only Leaf fans but true hockey fans, by getting involved in playoff topics when they're out. They don't do it to make fun of us, just to talk hockey. So we should show respect, even if the occasional golf joke is fair enough. :D

Completely agree that it is hard to compare series against different opponents from 4 years back or 10. It is sometimes difficult, and going to get even harder, to compare two series between the same teams in back to back years with the player turnover that they NHL teams will soon see.

Thank you for your comment Stan (and Crazxy Shea) . The word troll has been thrown around way too loosely lately. I just came to check the Koivu status and wondered into this thread to see what 2002 was all about.
