Who would be Habs'#1 center if...

If Arnott would be signed.

ARNOTT

6'4, 220; born Oct 11, 1974; drafted 7th in 1st round 1993;RH shooter
Reg season: 824 games - 276 goals - 368 passes - 644 points +38 999 PIM
Playoffs: 91 games; 25 G; 35 A; 60 Points +6 68 PIM

KOIVU - 4.8 million per year for the next three years !

5"10, 184; born Nov 23, 1974; drafted 21st in 1st round, 1993; LH shooter
Reg season: 569 games; 137 G; 323 A; 460 Points; +11 412 PIM
Playoffs: 43 Games; 13 G; 23 A; 36 points; +11 36 PIM

If Koivu is making 4.8 with those stats, how much Arnott will demand ?

ChemiseBleuHonnete 05-07-2006 05:57 PM

I didn't even looked at your stats... All I know is that Koivu > Arnott and that's the only thing that matters.

x-bob 05-07-2006 05:59 PM

Koivu. Koivu will always have more ice-time then Arnott if he was on our team.

EagleBelfour 05-07-2006 06:01 PM

Ryder - Koivu - Kovalev
Higgins - Arnott - Perezhogin

Nice!

Exactly. And I think Arnott would be even better on a 2nd than on a 1st line, its like Bégin he is better in a smaller role than a bigger one..

Clumsyhab 05-07-2006 06:07 PM

If we could land Arnott this summer, we will finally have a good top 2 lines for the first time in 10 years. Please get him Bob!!!

montreal 05-07-2006 06:38 PM

Koivu will make 4.5 as a salary not 4.8M His cap hit is 4.75 due to his signing bonus. As for how much Arnott would demand, I hope it's a lot more and some other team pays him, not a fan of his but then again I am not a fan of Bonk's never have, never will. I never really cared much for Kovalev either, so I'm used to us getting players I don't care for. I'd rather see more Begin's and Koivu's

tinyzombies 05-07-2006 06:51 PM

There's also the distinct possibility that aside from Arnott's career year this year that he would return to being a floater and become the next Bonk once he gets his last big contract.

SO Koivu outproduces Arnott
Arnott regular season with a 0.78 points per game
Koivu regular seasen with a 0.80 points per game

Arnott Playoff with a 0.65 points per game +6
Koivu playoff with a 0.83 points per game +11

So Arnott should get a touch less then Koivu contract wise.

Habruti! 05-07-2006 08:37 PM

As far as I am concerned and if I can relate to previous thread, if we where to sign Arnott we would end up with three no.2 centers in Koivu, Plekanek, Arnott. I would believe that from a point perpective Koivu would still lead the team.

Maybe he'd be happier posting on a francophone forum, although I have found the fans who post on the RDS forums to be saner and more balanced than M. 'abitué. By the way, I couldn't read his post because he's on my ignore list. But please don't spoil my day by repeating what he said!

Squeaky 05-07-2006 08:45 PM

Hang on, we're comparing their career stats in a discussion about what they will get on their next contract and who is better? (both at the same time somehow, but I'll let it slide.

What on earth does their performance 8 years ago have to do with them now?

Habs13 05-07-2006 10:18 PM

Koivu = God!! ...Arnott... whatevah sistah!

No i would put Kovalev with Arnott...give Kovalev some space and put a big center in front of the net when Kovalev shoots.

CoupeStanley 05-07-2006 10:41 PM

Koivu is a much better hockey player than Arnott.
That would become quite visible once they are on the same team.

NORiculous 05-07-2006 10:46 PM

I know most won't agree but I would rather have Ribs over Arnott, even if they had the same salary...

Koivu is superior to both.

Agree 100% sir (on every count).

Same thinking as me. Over the last few years, i just can't stand so many of the players that have been brought in. Bonk i thought would have a better effect, but the amount of soft inconsistent forwards that have passed thru Montreal over the last few years is mindboggling. Kovalev, Berezin, Czerkawski, Audette, Sundstrom, Dagenais. Barf.

I love the team and always will, i just hate the style of play we have seen over the last 10 years. I like talent as much as the next guy, fancy plays and highlite reels, but first and foremost i want a team that is tough to play against. Guys that don't give and inch, and bring effort night in night out. People hate teams like NJ and Calgary, but these teams are also the hardest to play against, and thats what i want.

Whatever. I prefer someone who stay healthy and play 70+ games a year rather than someone who a la Benoit Brunet, whos good.. but always in the training room or medical center...

mcphee 05-08-2006 08:02 AM

I think discussing #1 or 2 is just a way of bringing up a different arguement. It's meaningless, how do you distinguish 1 or 2. Lines are formed to team needs. If Arnott ends up with certain linemates, he can be more productive or less than Koivu . There games are different and the thinking is that one player can bring a differnt element. The team movong forward seems to want players who'll 'get after it', to use a hoser expression. They want good players to fill certain roles, why the need to define unless the point is something else altogether ? MY guess is that whoever C's Kovalev will rack up the most points.

beowulf 05-08-2006 09:04 AM

Not an Arnott fan and would rather make some other move unless arnott can be had for peanuts which is likely not the case. As for someones sugggestion for Latandress on the second line, no thanks unless he can prove he deserves it. I rather see Perez who at least has an NHL season under his belt now.

Habruti! 05-08-2006 09:43 AM

Koivu is our number one center for years to come there is no doubt about it. If we can find a 2nd center that can offload the physical abuse on Koivu's body we will only become a better team. Koivu did show some signs of fatigue this year... some of it may be due to the fact that he was playing PP, PK and 1st line time at the beguinning of the year, some of it may be due to the olympics. One thing is for sure is that we must make sure he is top shape for the playoff and that we have guys that can carry the ball if he is not there.

Arnott is a head case yes but he is also a special type of guy that we did not have in the past. A guy that creates space for his linemates (who can be speedy wingers like MTL has). A guy who goes to the net... (which we did not have for a long time before Higgins). I am a strong believer that on a successfull line you need a guy that can go to the net, a guy that can stick handle through traffic and a guy that can shoot the puck and operate at high speed. That being said I think with Arnott we could have three very successfull line which seems to be the story of the winning teams this year....

1a. Higgins, Koivu, Kostitsyn
1b. Latendresse, Plekanek, Kovalev
1c. Perezhogin, Arnott, Ryder
2. Begin, (Lapierre/Bonk/Chipchura), Murray

Me thinks Chipchura will be better playing top minutes in the AHL next year. Me also thinks that Lapierre will get a very serious look for the fourth line center and that could possibly mean that Bonk's contract could be bougth out. Sundstrum/Bulis/Zednik will be let go/traded when applicable IMO. The fall back position IMO is to use Bonk instead of Arnott, Unless Ribs has a super Camp and shows that he could handle the second line...

What's funny about this thread is that he's trying to take a shot at Koivu, when in fact as you've shown Koivu actually scores at a better rate.

Some people need to get over the fact that they don't like Koivu because he's our captain next season and will be until he retires. T
