Joe Thorton Vs Vinnie Lecav

Who is worth more? Why would Vinnie be worth more?

Vinnie is worth more simply because he belongs to a team that doesn't have an owner with tight purse strings.... or not-easily-removable-wallet-velcro. What the owner does in his spare time is his own business.

As far as I hate to admit it, Joe Thornton worths more than Lecavalier. Even though, when playoffs time comes, gimme Vinny! Thornton is a choker, but in the regular season, gimme Joe and it's not even close.

Tricolore#20 06-09-2006 09:52 PM

I've said it in another thread, but if this thread was created to assess whether we could put together a package comparable to the one that San Jose put together to get no-show Joe, then there really isn't a point. Mike O'Connell messed up royally, and has given proof to the rest of the NHL that dealing a star player usually results in a terrible package, not comparable in return. The only trade involving a star player in recent memory that was anything of equal value for both sides was the Heatley for Hossa deal. I doubt Feaster makes a move, unless he can get a similar type deal for Vinny.

The Thornton deal only proves what incompetent managing can do to one team, and it shouldn't be used as a standard to assess what star players can fetch.

Teufelsdreck 06-09-2006 09:55 PM

I've noticed over the years that in head-to-head games between the Bruins and the Lightning, Lecavalier tended to outplay Thornton.

Vinnies gotten it done in the playoffs

Agree 100%

For the course of a season, there is no doubt that Thornton has way more impact than Lecavalier.

Comes playoff time... Thornton disappears... it is not so much that Lecavalier becomes a very valuable player... but more that Thornton is simply not there (at least so far in his career).

Obviously none of them are to be confused with Maurice Richard, or even Claude Lemieux for that matter.

Teufelsdreck 06-09-2006 10:19 PM

Would Thornton take on Jarome Iginla in a fist fight because he feels it's necessary to stand up for his team? I think not. Lecavalier did it in the 2004 finals.

Also, does Thornton have enough balls to stand up to Zdeno Chara? twice? I think not. Vinny did.

:)

Brad Richards is the soul of the Lightning. Lecavalier is so much overated here ! Sure he's big and sometimes he has a big desire, but he's a lot inconsistant and he hasn't done a lot in playoffs IMO. He's a little bit better than Thornton in playoffs, but in the season, Thornton is the better player without hesitation.

Thornton all the way, even if I hate him :(

Dr_Hook 06-09-2006 11:21 PM

Thornton= fantastic point producer in the regular season but has a well-deserved reputation of vanishing in the playoffs
Lecavalier = better goal scorer; elevates his game in the clutch; can play with an edge; but he's kindda inconsistant and carries a hefty contract for a guy that'll never contend for the Art ross.
*** warning, I'm gonna be a puss here***All in all, on the trade market I'd say they're about even money

NewHabsEra* 06-09-2006 11:25 PM

I take Vincent Lecavalier over Thorton in a heartbeat.

Pere Noel 06-09-2006 11:53 PM

But of course, I would take Crosby over the two :)

I'd take Big Joe without even thinking twice.

bfire 06-10-2006 12:56 AM

Wow this is bias because he's french canadian, cmon now the answer is obvious

Clumsyhab 06-10-2006 01:19 AM

Right now, Joe Thornton is the best centre in the league followed by Sid the Kid. Lecavalier is not even in the top 5 centre in the league. I want him on my team tho, because he's the one that has the most chance ending up with us.

Sid is already better than Thornton IMO, but this is an whole other debate. You know, the Kid has STILL to choke in the playoffs so... :biglaugh:

Yes, a lot of Habs spin going on in this thread. Vinny is only a 0.67 ppg player over 39 games in the playoffs.

Thornton is a 0.59 ppg player. This year Thornton had a greater ppg (0.80) than any of the years Vinny had in the playoffs.

I think Joe wins because he can put you into the top seeds in the conference.

You guys are really mixing Lecalvelier and Richards up. (Richards, 1.60 ppg this year, 1.00 lifetime.)

:shakehead

Um, if you're talking about someone to play with Kovalev, you'd best be thinking Thorton.

Joe with Kovy and Zed would be unstoppable (well almost). Joe was very good in the playoffs in the two game I saw him this year.
