Shanahan's demands?

Brendan Shanahan: Evan at his advanced age (37), 40 goals is 40 goals. The Blues are reportedly out after re-signing Petr Cajanek, the Senators and Canadiens -- having been spurned by Jason Arnott -- remain in the hunt, and the Bruins, who are acting as if the salary cap is a suggestion rather then a strict guideline, are the frontrunners. Rumors of Shanahan's stunning contract demands -- upwards of $5 million per year for at least two years

DerekT 07-05-2006 03:11 PM

The line about the Bruins made me laugh.

waffledave 07-05-2006 03:11 PM

Why not. We're not doing anything else with the money and I'd rather see it go towards improving the team than sit in Gilette's pockets.

kostitsyn1489 07-05-2006 03:12 PM

I heard a last week he ask about 2M per years... It's not really interesting now at 5M/year

LeHab 07-05-2006 03:14 PM

Since he is over 35, we can give him performance bonuses. If he can score again 40goals and get 80 points I have no problem giving him 5 or even more millions.

Talent Analyst 07-05-2006 03:14 PM

5m/year is too much ... I ratter have Kostitsyn or Latendresse making the big club at 1 million than that

F. Duchemin 07-05-2006 03:14 PM

he is going to have at least 4.5

That's what happens when you get a bidding war for the few decent foreward UFAs that were available.

I'm on the fence at that price... would probably go for it though. All depends whether Gainey has other more promissing avenues (trades) up his sleeve.

Um? Who cares how old he is his he can score 40 goals and 80 points?

Why is that not worth 5 million? So he is old, dont give him a 5 year 25, give him a 2 year or even 1 year deal, or one year with second year option

kostitsyn1489 07-05-2006 03:17 PM

Yeah I know but I thought he wants to play on two or three city and he accepts less money. I think it's stupid to start a bidding when you wanna choose where you gonna play.

Alouette_19 07-05-2006 03:24 PM

5M$/ year :shakehead

4M$ maximum

Anyway BG will make a trade or let Latendresse and Kostsitsyn show what they can bring for less $$$

C-Saku Koivu MTL 07-05-2006 03:25 PM

5mil$ might be ok for this year for the Habs. But were gonna need that 5 mil$ cap space next year in order to re-sign atleast two of Markov/Rivet/Souray + adding one UFA D-man to replace the one leaving. Markov should get around 5mil$/Rivet 3mil$ and Souray will be looking for 4.5mil$ out west. add the fact that we might have to re-sing some fowards too depending on some new contract made this year.

BTW this is why I think bringing Emelin over this year was a must. He could have taken Souray's spot starting next year with 1 season of AHL hockey under his belt.
Markov-Komi/Cube-Rivet/Emelin-Dandy would have been fine for next year.

KaptainKourage* 07-05-2006 03:26 PM

4M + 1M if he score 40 goal sounds good to me

Are you dillisional? Shany is a future HOF and SCORED 40 GOALS, Lat is a rookie who never played in the NHL before. 5 mill for a player WHO SCORED 40 goals, it's a no brainer if we aren't spendin that money on anyone else. Kost and Lat, as much as I can't wait for them to break out, we need people who can score NOW

HH 07-05-2006 03:30 PM

Yea 5M$ is too much, I would give him a 2yr/ 8.5M$ max.

F. Duchemin 07-05-2006 03:32 PM

5M is alright for shanny. 4M for 40 goals and 1M for all the leadership and experience he bring.

4.2 would be alright and not 5 ?...cmon the difference aint gonna kill us and shanny could really help us.

sXe 07-05-2006 03:33 PM

You can only have bonuses after 35 when you sign a one-year deal wich Shanny obviously doesn't want.

Well, he can get his 10M/2 years elsewhere then.

F. Duchemin 07-05-2006 03:38 PM

if you will never be ready to bring a leader who can play for 5M... you wont see a cup anytime soon.

HabsUnited 07-05-2006 03:40 PM

4, 4.5 or 5, I don't really care, it's not my money. Sure, there is the issue of the cap, but so far I haven't seen any teams that are in 'cap-hell' make any desperate moves so far. I'm sure Lou has a plan for his team and a half-decent GM (which Bo is) will learn to work around them, and we should stop using that excuse not to spend IMO. Besides, the way I look at it, who's more useful, Shanahan at 5mil or Sykora+Poti at a combined 5mil? I say ShanaHAB.

ok thanks for clarification

HH 07-05-2006 03:42 PM

Look what are we cheap?! Shanahan could bring leadership to the young players and bring his Cup experience, let's give him 5M$ we can afford it and he's worth it.

F. Duchemin 07-05-2006 03:44 PM

stop with your performance bonus... he will stop listening to you as soon as you mention them and he will go somewhere else where there is a guaranted salary.

that's what I'm thinking.

digitalmonkey* 07-05-2006 03:49 PM

2years/$10 million? Do it BG....draw up the contract now.

This guy would go such a long way in teaching the young players that his point production is almost a bonus.
