Canadiens' future goes camping

Prospects unite in Montreal for annual development camp
21 prospects invited to development camp

MONTREAL - Summer school is, at times, a necessary evil that students look to avoid at any cost. That is unless you’re a recent Canadiens draft pick now experiencing what can be best described as Habs 101 all week long at the Bell Centre.

With a toothbrush, their equipment, but no sleeping bag required, the camp marks another important step for 21 prospects on their path to the NHL. Spearheaded in part by Director of Player Personnel Trevor Timmins, the seven-day Canadiens Development Camp gives players and coaches alike the opportunity to get to know one another, both on and off the ice.

“The very first thing we make sure to tell these kids is that this is not an evaluation,” warned Timmins. “This is our chance to provide our prospects with the tools our organization feels are necessary to be successful as players and as human beings.”

No stone is left unturned at a camp that sees everything from hockey skill development, tips on nutrition, training and even yoga end up on the menu...

Gainey: “It’s all about getting the right player.”
Bob Gainey met with the media on Tuesday morning at Martin Lapointe Arena.

MONTREAL -- With big dollars and extended contract years being dolled out like they’re going out of style to unrestricted free agents since July 1, Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey refuses to get caught up in all of the hype.

“It’s all about getting the right player,” said Gainey, after making an appearance at Martin Lapointe Arena on Day 3 of the Canadiens’ Development Camp on Tuesday . “We have the money to spend. If we spend it well, we’ll have value for it and our fans will value for it. If we spend it poorly, then we’re both going to suffer.”

Now almost two weeks into the free agent frenzy, the Canadiens GM continues to stick to his guns.

“We came into this with a plan and the list of players that have interested us is a short one,” explained Gainey. “Free agency is exactly that. Players are free to choose where they want to go. If you look at the big picture, there are more players that didn’t fit into our plans than those for whom we didn’t fit into theirs.”

As he has from the get-go, Gainey made no secret what type of player remains at the top of his wish list....
