Mathieu Carle

Draft Day 2006, many fans of the Montreal Canadians were not happy with the Mathieu Carle pick.

''There was some better player on the table'' said some, ''he's lazy and bad defensively'' said the others.

But after the development camp, Carle seems to be one of our best pick so far...sure Fischer's upside is way bigger, but Carle do have some sick skills, and not only offensively.

So right now, after what you had the chance to see/read on Mathieu Carle, are you happy with the pick?

We had 2 second round picks and I'm happy we used one of those picks to take a chance on a risky guy like Carle.

He'll rack up tons of points in the Q next year so we won't know how good this pick is until we see him in the AHL.

Good pick nonetheless considering we also go Maxwell in the 2nd round.

I was very pleased with how Carle looked at the development camp, but it is important to note that the focus was on offensive skills, and the biggest questions were about Carle's defensive play.

He is a good skater, has nice hands. I'm happy with the pick for now, but time will tell how it turns out.

Not sure yet.

Some nice things written about the guy through the camp but that doesn't help matters much. As much as i respect the opinions of some of those people who provided reports from the camp, I still haven't seen him play for myself. Those reports have me more optimistic about him, but I'd still like to see the guy play so i can form my own view. So, not sure yet, but more favourable than the initial comments I heard about him from people here after he was drafted.

He seems to be the all-out offensive dman the habs system has been lacking for a while. So by itself that's good.
But like Qui Gon Dave said, kind of hard to evaluate him without seeing him play. I'll try to catch some of his games in the Q next season.

I voted not sure yet too. The comments from the prospect camp are encouraging. But as others said, he's probably a guy who comes out well on the skills aspect, and it's also worth bearing in mind that he was only 2 weeks away from being eligible in last year's draft, and has a bit of an experience advantage on some of the other 18-year old kids drafted.

Value-wise, I can't complain too much with getting him at #53 which is roughly where he was projected, and the Habs guys are reportedly much higher on him even than that. There were really a lot of defensemen in this draft that were hard to choose between from the armchair, and it will be interesting to see how Strait, Gryba, McBain, Junland, Weber, DeGray, Lapoint, Montgomery, Shutron and some of those types turn out relative to Carle.

I looked him play since the midget and all his seasons in junior... I was very excited by this player and when I saw his name picked by Montreal, I jumped!!! :jump:

So how would you rate him defensively?

He's OK... Not dominant, but not a plague... But, as you surely know, it's especially his offensive part of the game which excites me...

Yeah I know...but his defensive game will either make him a bottom pairing D and a PP specialist or a top 4 defenceman who will be on the PP...that's why I was asking the question...

Yeah I'm going to do a couple of scouting reports on Carle...he's going to play against Moncton quite a while so that's good for me!

BJCOLLINS 07-18-2006 09:53 AM

I voted "yes".....I'm as happy as you can be with the #53 pick.

What I like is, RD who can skate well and looks up ice, good shot, good first pass his work in his own end can be worked on. You can't teach some of the offensive talents that are inate with this kid. Also I think it is very important for the Habs to be selecting players from PQ based on their abilities first.
Lats is another good pick up both for his obvious up side but being home grown doesn't hurt.

We are a long way from the flying frenchmen of the 70's but it would be nice to see a player from PQ be a stand out wearing CH.

I really like that pick, sure it's a risky pick, but I'm fully confident in Habs scouts, especially Timmins. But I don't expect to see Carle with the team before at least 3-4 years, his offensive skills with lack of defensive skills remember me Hainsey when he was pick.. But this time, we didn't use a 1rst round pick for that kind of player :p .. Plus we never really give a shot to Hainsey in NHL.. so I hope Habs will give a real chance to Carle in few years.

I'm in Rimouski... I will do too! ;)

IMO, with Fischer, Maxwell & White that are '' safe '' pick, we did the right choice in picking a more risky player in Carle.

Maithz 07-18-2006 11:47 AM

I am really high on Carle so yes

Quiet Robert 07-18-2006 11:54 AM

I was one who thought that there were better players available, but I think it's okay we took the chance on him. Still, I liked guys like Burki, Marchand or even take a chance on Joensuu.

If he can get his head wrapped around the concept of defence, I think he could be a good bottom pairing guy for us. I think it's good he'll rack up a ton of points in the Q this year and get his confidence up.

I love the Maxwell pick at 49 though. That pick was great. So with that pick being taken, I think it's better to take more a "risky" pick in Carle.
