My favourite Hab of all time. Wore 10 at every chance all through minor and junior hockey. Met him several times when I worked for Oldtimers Hockey Challenge.

Nice guy, great player.

The Flower could dangle. Goes #3 on my all-time favorite Habs list

1. Big Bird
2. The Rocket
3. The Flower

Whenever I see footage from anytime before the '90s, the goalies always look so crappy and the goals unimpressive.

Not to take anything away from Lafleur, but that's just my observation.

Duff88 08-12-2006 05:43 PM

I have never seen him play... (except on repeated games on NHL Network)

As good as he was as a hockey player, I hate him on interviews. I pretty much disagree with everything he says. :dunno:

Well, overall players are bigger and faster now than they were even 20 years ago. And goalie equipment has come a loooooong way. That being said, I can still sit and watch games from the 70's for hours and hours. Then, those were the glory days of the Habs.

GUY! GUY! GUY!

I think that's the main reason. Goalies started having huge goalie, chest and shoulder pads in the early 1990s.

But for example, they're always showing that 1987 Canada Cup goal by Lemieux. He shoots it from practically the blue line and the Czech goalie is 10 meters out of his goal, and we're supposed to believe that this is an impressive goal.

The impression that Lafleur always left with me was the individual skills. Beautiful passer, great sense of timing, even in his 1st 3 years when he hadn't really got it going, you could see it. Things like receiving a pass, doesn't sound like much, but he had uncanny hand eye coordination. Great release on his shot. There just weren't other guys doing these things.

What a player he was ! so fast and with his famous canon shut .

a lot of board's fans think that i don't like Saku ; it's not that , it's only that i saw players like Lafleur , Shutt or Béliveau , so when the fans here call Saku a God ...

To me,it comes down to appreciating different things. Lafleur, it was the skill and the flair he played with. Beliveau it was a kind of elegance. I admire the determination that our present C plays with. His attitude in some ways makes me think of henri Richard. Shutt and Robinson always reminded me that it was a game, and it was fun to play. I loved guys like McPhee,Keane and Skrudland because they made theirw ay into the league by just outworking players.

Thats because the technology and camera angles are so much better today than they where back then.

but it's also that the players are a way in better shape now ; Imagine ,the players were smokers and a lot of them were also drinking a lot of beers night after night

Lafleur had such a quick release, that most goalies just didn't get a chance to react.
