That is freaking ridiculous. The Quebec highway system is terrible. Why would it collapse? There was no flood or earthquake or hurricane force winds. It just collapsed? For no reason at all? How is that even possible?

Well, gravity for one.

Most of American (North) infrastructure is in poor condition. No one likes to spend money on unsexy repair / rehab projects. And it takes lots of money to fix stuff that big and heavy and concrete and steel. Sadly, it usually takes something like an overpass collapse or a dam failure to get peoples attention for about 15 minutes.

Until it's OK to forget about it again.

Lady Rhian 09-30-2006 05:06 PM

Bruinster, any updates on this? Have they gotten more folks out?

big-bad-bruin 09-30-2006 08:14 PM

There aren't going to be any survivors. They've had a news helicopter hovering around there since earlier today and it doesn't look good. The overpass was made of 4 feet thick concrete and when it collapsed, it caused the paved road below it to cave in about a foot....not a pretty sight. :shakehead

I'm very sorry to hear that. I was hoping folks were able to get out. :(

Bit OT from the rest of the topic, but has to do with collapsing, but didnt the tunnel thing in Fall River (the tunnel you go under while your on the highway, its under a building, close to the Braga Bridge) collapse a few years back?

Return to Glory 09-30-2006 08:52 PM

And now we wait for the "Big Dig" to collapse. It's only a matter of time. When I first heard of the "Dig" I am sorry, but I thought the worst. I *knew* no-one could pull this off without problems. I knew that it would be a financial nightmare, which it already has become about 3 or so years ago, and it could possibly be a target for the Muslim nut-cases that hate America and their allies.

And for the most part, it hasn't helped the traffic in Boston! Driving in Boston is like driving nails into your own skull. The $14 Billion price tag makes it worth it though?

Quebec doesn't repair its bridges properly. All they do is dump some concrete on the cracks and hope really hard that it holds.

I remember having a conversation about that last year with my uncle. He kept saying that eventually, something was just going to collapse.

I live in Hull. Not only are the the roads and bridges on major arteries in some disrepair the entire highway system appears to be designed by a drunken engineer.

Saw it on the news earlier. My wife and I have been to the area a few times starting with our honeymoon and we thought the roads were not much worse than what we have in Boston. Our prayers are with all of the families affected by this tragic accident.

It sounds like the bridge inspectors at Transport Quebec are doing a great job.:sarcasm:

Bruinster* 10-01-2006 09:03 AM

Finally, 2 cars was under and all of them (five) are dead.

Six people are injured and at least two feared dead.

Beezy 10-01-2006 09:34 AM

Bruinster, remind me not to hang out with you. Weren't the shootings at your school a few weeks ago and now a bridge you cross collapses?

What next, a rabid animal in your backyard?

Our great Laval mayor says it was inpected last year. Probably January 1st, 2005.

The was a report saying 65% of bridges in Quebec are safe. :sarcasm:
