Joe Sakic vs Peter Forsberg

If both were 18 year olds and you could draft either one to start your franchise, who would it be? Both are superb offensively and can play on both sides of the puck contributing defensively when needed. Both are great centers and are both leaders in their own ways. While Forsberg has won an Art Ross award and is more rugged, you must also take his injury-proneness into consideration.

Sakic has till now, 1331 points in 1092 games in 16 seasons and 157 playoff points in 142 games.
Forsberg has till now, 705 points in 552 games in 9 seasons and having 143 playoff points in 122 playoff games.

One must also consider the fact that Sakic played in a more offensively-friendly era. But one should also take into account that while Forsberg's point-per-game ratio is higher, he has never scored more than 30 goals a season while sakic had two 50+ goal seasons and two 48 goal seasons.

If you could take one to start your franchise, who would it be? and why?

I will give my personal choice later :)

Sakic ... durability.

Foppa 11-19-2003 04:12 PM

Thank god this was not what I thought it was going to be...

It is an interesting question...I think that the overwhelming popular majority are going to vote for Burnaby Joe. Most notably because despite the 'incident' last night, he is a more popular figure overall. Forsberg causes intense like or dislike. Its hard to find someone who doesn't like Joe. He's not Mr. Personality, but he's about the least offensive person on earth. Add to that his hard-working character, Conn Smythe run, Canadian-heritage (not trying to imply any kind of nationalistic bias - but by its nature, the NHL is played in North America), and skills which at worst are certainly not anything less than comparable to Forsberg's...and you have my prediction for the winner.

I do however think Forsberg is just so unique and it makes it hard.

I'll have to sleep on it :)

Forsberg. He's just the better all round player. The only knock is he gets injured too often.

Sandman13 11-19-2003 04:14 PM

Without a doubt I would take Sakic. He has been so consistent, he is a great leader, and he does not get injured like Forsberg (although he is injury prone).

MoS* 11-19-2003 04:19 PM

Well personally i would take forsberg. despite his injuries, he is a star player and a classy guy. as evidenced by the fact sakic accepted the rangers' rfa' offer which the avs had the match and the fact forsberg signed a quick contract the year when both sakic and blake became ufa's and then next year forsberg did not ask for a raise when that contract expired as he felt his injury was unfair to the colorado organization.

well ultimately for me it came down to the fact forsberg is the more talented player. while he scores much less goals, he is the most dominant player in the league. he can hit, play defense and make his entire team better. when you play against forsberg, even if his teammate is tie domi and a pilon, it is like playing against 3 forwards instead of one. forsberg has an amazing PPG despite playing in a low-scoring era. he initiates contact and doesn't shy from the rough stuff. he is simply a wizard with the puck and have control in the offensive zone like no one else. he has also won a gold medal and been absolutely killer on the world stage. with all that being said, i will take forsberg even tho he is by far, my most hated nhl forward.

Foppa 11-19-2003 04:25 PM

I'm must admit I'm surprised MoS...especially since besides Avs fans, Canucks fans seem to have the biggest soft spot for Burnaby Joe. :)

I will say one thing that has always stuck in my mind. Right before beating Florida in '96, the Panthers coach (who was it then? Can't remember...) was interviewed and asked which player he considered the most dangerous and important to contain on Colorado. I think he was angling for a Sakic slant, but the Panthers coach said Forsberg. Keep in mind, this was at the height of Sakic's Conn Smythe run, which was one of the best playoff point streaks in history.

Not that that should make the case either way, but just an interesting tidbit.

yep some of the canuck fans here really love burnaby joe but....... he's an av and i hate them all the same :p

joe sakic is a fine player but my soft spot is always for the more talented, less-durable player. ie. the lemieux vs gretzky argument. its obvious lemieux is better right??? :p

Joey...

he is a great player...with great leadership skills...and keeps his mouth shut, and out of trouble...

plus his wrist shot is deadly

evman150* 11-19-2003 05:22 PM

I hate the Avs, but love Joe Sakic.

He is one of my favorite players, and the only player left with the Avs that played serious time on my old favorite team the Nordiques.

Agree with this post.

ahmon 11-19-2003 07:24 PM

for a franchise then its sakic.. but the best player all-around is Forsberg....

Freudian 11-19-2003 07:30 PM

Forsberg is the better player. But Sakic is like Yzerman the archetypical franchise player so I would pick him.

Jeffrey 11-19-2003 07:38 PM

well if i remember well ,
sakic was put Nords Captain at the age of 19-20 or something like that ... he was a good young classy player.. but some fans were complaining about is size and strenght... (even some wanted him to be traded)
Forsberg played his 1st NHL season at the age of 21-22 if I remember ..
he was a highly skilled player with VERY VERY VERY nice upside!
He was my favorite player since i saw him playing for the 1st time...
Forsberg was already (after 1 year with the Nords) a key player just like sakic ...
The year after ... the nords finish 1st in the East conference.. but they were eliminated by the rags or Kerry Fraser choose who you want.. just after this(2-3 months after) the nords are sold .. that was the worst day of my life..

so from my memory sakic expectation was way higher than forsberg at the time .. but Foppa developed way better than Sakic (IMO) ...
so i'll take a young forsberg .. :dunno:

RoyIsALegend* 11-19-2003 07:41 PM

You want me to pick between Joe Sakic and Peter Forsberg?

...

Sergei Fedorov or Steve Yzerman?

Red Wings fans will resoundingly pick Yzerman.

Exactly what I thought. He is the only Avs player that I don't absolutely despise.....

Yeah, Yzerman. HE has done soooooooo much. I think there is a smaller gap between Forsberg and Sakic.

Mack 11-19-2003 07:51 PM

Sakic by this much

What? A diving competition? That's what I was expecting until I saw the thread starter wasn't ChockFullOfBooger or Vishinator.

Anyways, I'd go with Forsberg because of his physical play and fiery nature. I just see him as a more dominant player, even if he is more injury prone.

Swedish Bolt Fan 11-19-2003 09:52 PM

Forsberg hands down, clearly the better overall player

Happy? ;)

El_Loco_Avs 11-20-2003 02:25 AM

Forsberg...
imagine having him on a team for 20 years...
(and forget about the 3 he'll be injured :rolly:)

You know... if you could get either, i'd be happy

Seph 11-20-2003 02:33 AM

Sakic

IMO, better defensively, better goal scorer, better leader.

If I'm building a team, I'd take that over playmaking and physical play any day of the week.

Although, if I already had a team with a solid core and got to add one of these players, I'd take Forsberg.

But really, you get either and you're pretty well set. Damn h'Aves, getting both.
