What about Koivu on the second line?

No body has ever mentioned this.

BUT what if this would work?

Higgins Pleks Ryder
Samsonov Koivu Kovalev

Their is a reason I suggest this. Pleks looks like he just can't order Samsonov and Kovy to do anything, he looks for them where they want to be, he looks like and indian with two chief on his line.
SO put Koivu at center, Koivu is the captain and a very dominant hockey player. Koivu will discuss tactics with his wingers from a position of strength and power as captain. Koivu is not a wall flower. If one of them is not putting out Koivu will get a bit angry and let him know right there on the bench. This just might be what Samsonov and Kovalev need, a real BOSS on that line.

Pleks just might feel much more comfortable with Higgins and Ryder. Guys his own age and he might not be intimidated.

If Carbo is going to experiment, this is one I would try for sure.

Tray4Adams 10-21-2006 11:52 AM

Pleks first line center. :shakehead

Why break up the chemistry of Higgins- koivu - ryder?

oli500 10-21-2006 11:59 AM

for the last time we canot touch the first line while its dominating. If it ever slows down than you can make changes but for now you do not touch it.

RC51 10-21-2006 11:59 AM

It's not about 1st or 2nd line, it's about getting Samsonov and Kovalev going. The Habs DON"T have a top second center. The chemistry is not getting there. In a perfect world Pleks is that good 3rd line center that he is realy good at.
Call Samsonov Koivu Kovalev the first line if it makes you feel better.

Both Higgins and Ryder know there rolls, you could put my sister there and these two would still manage to put up some numbers.
Yes put Koivu there and it's a great line.

BUT that second line???? If Koivu can be the BOSS, get these two going, put up some good numbers its a good thing.

When you car does not start, you get a boost but you don't have too leave the booster cables on forever.

What happens if Koivu cant get the second line going and pleks cant keep the chemistry going. Then we got no lines.Smart Move:sarcasm: :shakehead

Nakamura 10-21-2006 12:12 PM

Carbonneau will give it more time.. until either it works out for Plekanec centering the second line or Bob will make a move..

Why change a winning combination of Koivu/Higgins/Ryder?

tritone 10-21-2006 12:50 PM

If koivu is centering Kovalev and Sammy, it wouldn't be the second line, it would be the first line.

Absolutely! The Higgins - Koivu - Ryder line is a lock. Do you understand, less than 100 posts guys?

Exactly. The Koivu line right now is so hot you don't touch it and let it do its own thing. Although I do think putting Samsonov- Koivu - Kovalev together would be a sick line.

Humm... my thoughts exactly. Not that moving Koivu away from Higgins & Ryder is a good idea.

Madevilz 10-21-2006 01:19 PM

Carbo wont break the first line, our only consistent one.

I could see Bonk moving to the 2nd, and Pleks centering the third which worked quite well during preseason.

Higgins and Ryder, playing with Bonk, accomplished little in the playoffs. Maybe it was because Ryder and Bonk were not at their physical best, but maybe there are better explanations.

So far it looks as though Samsonov is the one who needs his battery charged. Right now, Plekanec and Kovalev look better than he does.

That's probably what Carbonneau would try next after his patience with Samsonov-Plekanec-Kovalev runs out. If he gets really desperate, he'll have Gainey call up Kostitsyn to play with Plekanec and Kovalev, or else insert Latendresse in Samsonov's place.

znk 10-21-2006 01:36 PM

I think it's becoming clear that the problem on that line is not the center.

psychonaut 10-21-2006 01:37 PM

I dont think its would be such a bad idea, Plex and Higgins had great chemestry and I do belive its would be a solid line. And the 2nd would be great Koivu makes the players arround him great. But I do understan not to break up the 1st but good be better at the end to have 2 great line working then just one. Its a gamble but one I think we should try!

Ottawa did it last year and it worked for them. I don't think their'd be much difference with the line if Pleks was centering higgs and ryder seing as they have prior chemistry (higgs-pleks). If it's what it takes to get 2 KEY players such as Kovalev and Samsonov going...then it's worth a shot.

saskhab 10-21-2006 01:46 PM

Kovalev should be our 2nd line center.

You really think he'll be the first to backcheck? You really want him to have the resposibility to cover the center of the defensive zone?

Quiet Robert 10-21-2006 01:51 PM

Well Koivu really is a 2nd line center, so he'd be right at home. :sarcasm:

In all seriousness, Plekanec is not the problem with the second line. I think maybe Kovalev on the first line would work. Or Samsonov on the 3rd line.

To me those are the two best options if really desperate to change things. Otherwise there's no real need to make a major shakeup.

There are worse players at it. It's the 2nd line, people, we aren't drawing the big time matchups with this group that would exploit weaknesses, they're all hemmed in on Higgins-Koivu-Ryder for now.

If Kovalev wants to control the game, he should do so from the middle, not the sideboards.

Anyways, we can try Bonk in the role if we want, that's fine, but it feels like we're grasping at straws. To me, to optimize secondary scoring, this is the best move from within the organization.

I don't know if Samsonov-anybody-Kovalev works, though. Good on Carbo if he is breaking them up.

Montreal4Life* 10-21-2006 02:18 PM

Didn't they try Pleks b/w Higgins and Ryder during the Playoffs last year and the line dissapeared completly?
I'd prefer not to touch on of the few good things about this team, thank you very much.

No, it was Bonk, Begin too I think.

MXD 10-21-2006 03:17 PM

I'd try Grabovski on the 2nd, we have (or can...) do a callup anyways.
