Thoughts on Carbo?

How do you guys feel about Carbo's job so far as head coach?

To be honest, at first I didn't think he was that great, but as time goes on I'm really starting to like him. Granted, it's to early to judge how strong his influence is on the team, but I definately like how the special teams have performed. He's still learning when it comes to line changes and bench management, which isn't perfect yet but at the same time, I don't think there's been one bench minor yet...compared to with Julien where there'd be bench minors almost every game.

Carbo is doing alot of little things right. Still rough around the edges but damn impressive for a rookie coach. I know some people don't agree with his lineups and goaltending decisions but all in all the team is winning so we shouldn't complain.

The Good: Special teams, faceoffs, shot blocking, abandoning Julien's passive trap.

The Bad: 5 on 5 play, defensive zone coverage, team discipline (stupid penalties).

Still not convinced he is head coach material long term. I was nervous the day he got hired and that still hasn't changed for me. If we go by last season's team performace with him as Associate coach, and the assumption that he was actually in charge and that Gainey was just a figurehead, then I am fine with him. Contrary to that, he still has a lot to prove for me to be comfortable with him.

Shabutie 10-24-2006 04:41 PM

I personally think that Gainey was better so far. But it's only 8 games in, Carbs is still learning.

One Trick Pony 10-24-2006 04:46 PM

we hav to learn to play 60 minutes...but thats not carbo's fault:)

Pascal 10-24-2006 04:51 PM

Let's not blame things on carbo that are the players' fault indeed.

I think he has done better than I expected so far. I think the whole coaching staff, team, and management are all on the same page, for once.

HardcoreHab 10-24-2006 04:56 PM

Is it just me or does he have a real condesending look about him. I swear he thinks everyone else is an idiot. I like it!

He's a hell of a lot more animated than robo-gainey. Not that that affects anything that we know about, but I swear sometimes a coach needs to act out a little to get results from his players.

It's a good start and I think he'll improve. Long term though? Who knows, way too early to tell.

Once we're 4-25-2, right?

You've already learned, and now you're the expert, right?

I'm happy with Carboneau performance . We playing so well in PK and we look more like a FAMILY team . People help each other and we look more like a hard working team .

But the problem ... Carbo is a young coach and we just have defencive specialist in Carbo , Jarvis and Muller ... where the offencive here ? That why the 8-5 victory impress me .

I like Carbo attitude . He's patient , emmotional and smarth . Finally a coach who made play young , want contribution of every player .. everytime .

mcphee 10-24-2006 07:36 PM

I was disappointed when CJ got canned, I like the guy. I felt immediately better when I heard Carbo's name. He's a pure hockey guy. He understands the game and the business and has lived it from all aspects.

Oh, Mr. clvmcs, Carbo is Gainey's guy, his choice. He'll hang his hat on that choice and ride out whatever problems arise. Don't think for a minute that a bad stretch will cause a panic move.

As for Gainey, I like whta the Hockey News guy, said about the team. They're close to being real good, and when they are, they'll be real good for a long time. Gainey had to come in and work in an environment that had lost league credibility. AS made some good moves, some good drafts, but theteam wasn't a 'player' in the league anymore. Now they are. Not enough though, as seen in the off season when we were shut out of the bidding war on the 3 or 4 targeted players.

I could criticize Gainey's plan B moves, but let's see how they play out. I thought Koivu could've been had for less, Samsonov might be redundant, but then again, lw on that line was an issue all last year.

Yeah, hire Bobby Clarke, then ufa's will come here and play for less $. snowrunner, do you mean that stuff or are you playing some type of satirical/devil's advocate game ?

Muller. It was another era, perhaps, but Muller has racked up 5 30-goal seasons and three 80+ points campaigns.

Exactly. I know you are young Talent but Muller was an offensive player for most of his career and only after he left Montreal and started to slow down did he turn into a decent defensive player.

Mr. Hab 10-24-2006 09:55 PM

CARBO was born to coach:yo: .

He was also coaching other teammates (especially the younger ones) when he was a PLAYER.

I could not be happier...Carbo as our Hab coach & Kirk "is work" Muller for our assistant coach:yo: . And, Gainey as GM. Things can't get any better.
Absolutely love it.

I'm so glad the Mario Tremblay/Rejean Houle days are over!:yo:

Claude Julien (not gonna bash him, but he never gave a chance to Higgins & Komisarek...that is the main reason I wasn't a huuuge fan of Julien, other than that he was a good coach, IMO).

Coco Fever 10-24-2006 10:00 PM

I really like the fact that he's straightfortward in news conference. Players know what to expect.
The team is well prepared (so far).

I like his coaching and I think he'll be there for along time

Teufelsdreck 10-24-2006 11:53 PM

Carbonneau has great potential as a coach. I expect him to keep improving for a long time.

NORiculous 10-24-2006 11:58 PM

In a short time he has the special teams working great.
With more time, he will probably get the rest going too.

I've been impressed with him. When that 2nd line gets going, it will be nice.

Mr. Hab 10-25-2006 01:46 AM

This is the first time that I can't think of anyone better for the coaching job (Carbo). Same thought goes for the GM position (Gainey), and also for the assistant coach position (Muller).

Couldn't be happier with Carbo:handclap: , Gainey:clap: , and Muller:yo: .

It doesn't get more credible than this!!
Only one more thing left...#25.

les Habs 10-25-2006 02:28 AM

Well it is early, but we have to like the returns. If this is down to Carbo then well done. The PK has been a joy to watch.

I have to say that it's great seeing a former player take the team. I liked Carbo as a player and I'm thrilled to see him as a coach. A few issues with that 2nd line, but IMO they just need time.

AH 10-29-2006 09:49 AM

The one thing that I have seen that bugs me about the Carbs is his inability to make in-game adjustments. We were being outplayed horrendously in the 1st last night and then we follow it up with a 2nd period which was worse. The only reason we made a comeback in the 3rd is because Toronto is one of the worst 3rd period teams in the NHL (check the numbers - they are like 28th in GF and GA in the 3rd period).

The guy simply does not know how to coach at even strength. His team is like a bunch of chickens with their heads cut off in the defensive zone. The team has no system. I dont see the strong forechecking style that was promised in the pre-season. I dont see any sort 'clogging up the neutral ice' initiative. There is too much space between the forwards and the defense. It doesn't help that his D is playing like utter crap, but then again so are his forwards in terms of coming back to help them.

And dont get me started on the penalties this team takes. He should call out his captain for that dumb penalty to start the game. It's not normal for a team with so much speed to be -16 when it comes to drawing / taking penalties.

Some of you can take comfort in the team's 5-2-3 record, but the team is playing like *****.

oli500 10-29-2006 10:37 AM

I really like what hes done with what he has. His defense is really playing like S it and were still finding ways to win. Most importantly were scoring goals and the goals are coming from every were but the fourth line. Its been a long tine since a hab team is capable of scoring 4 or 5 goals on a nightly basis. The poor performance on 5-5 is a result of the constant line changes and the poor defense. Once carbo finds the right mix and chemestry in are 4 lines and are injured players on defense comes back were going to be allright. We still havent played are best hockey, It could be alot worse. Carbo has done a great job on keeping are team heads above water.
