A.J. Thelen, D, 6-3, 205, Shoots: R, Birthday: March 11, 1986; Savage, Minn./U.S. National Under-17 Team

He's the 2nd youngest player in NCAA Div 1 hockey and he's averaging a point per game so far for Michigan State.

My only question... if he's a point per game player at this age in that league, how does he fall to the middle of the second round?

I can dream can't I?

I was just going off of THN saying that he's rated 86th by an independant scouting service.

Who knows, if he keeps playing like this he might work himself into the 1st round. If the Sabres have a mid to late 1st rounder and he's on the board, I probably wouldn't be too upset if they took him in the 1st.

The biggest question I have about him is how tough is he?

From CSB:

A.J. Thelen (Michigan State)

A.J. Thelen suffered a knee injury in last Saturday's (Nov. 15/03) game. He will not play in scheduled games on either tonight (Nov. 20) or Friday (Nov. 21).
As additional information becomes available on his status - we will let you know.

Doesn't NO CBA = NO 2004 draft?

The CBA doesn't expire until September, 2004.

The normal offseason schedule (Draft, arbitration, FA, etc.) will happen with teams having no clue what the new CBA will look like unless something gets agreed to during the season. Which we all know won't happen.

Well, at least he got hurt before I found out about him.

SabresRule 11-24-2003 01:18 PM

good prospect, lets hope we get him.

It's kind of funny, because last year around this time I spotted Vanek and said to myself "Maybe the Sabres will pick this guy up in the 2nd round next year or something".

4 THELEN, A.J. Michigan State CCHA 11-Mar-86 6'3 205 D L

I guess he's not a right handed shot..........

WhoIsJimBob 11-25-2003 02:23 AM

One more thing though, he may wait until the 2005 Draft. I believe he'll lose his NCAA eligibility if he opts into the draft this year.

Kind of like Rick Dipietro did.

Well, after watching the tape of the Michigan State-Minnesota game I like Thelen a little bit more.

He wasn't afraid to throw his weight around, although he took a hitting from behind and a boarding penalty. I thought the boarding call was pretty weak.

Oh yeah, some guy named Vanek had a goal and an assist, was a +1, had 10 shots on goal, threw a nice open ice hit on Jim Slater, and was named first star of the game.

Nice report. I like the scoring, love the "extra" with hitting Slater.

The funniest part about that was the Gophers announcers tripping out over the hit because Vanek isn't known to take the body like that. They even said something about Thomas not liking hte fact that they were so surprised about the hit.

Although, I really liked what I saw in that game. Thomas went to the front of the net alot. He came back into the corners in the defensive zone a few times. And he did get his nose dirty.

His skating hasn't improved noticably, but I'm not that worried about it right now.

I found another defenseman to watch:

Jeff Likens from the University of Wisconsin.

He was just named to the US WJC team and so far this year has outscored fellow Badger freshman blueliner Ryan Suter.

He's small (5'11" 175), but he is a right handed shot.
