On the trade rumors area - a yotes fan was asking about interest in Brad Ference (he's been a healthy scratch lately). I've always liked the kid - big, tough, decent wheels and he's not afraid to fight. A little sketchy in the decision-making but I think Huddy could fix that. I see him as a perfect Oiler dman project and bigger better version of Brown. I proposed a straight swap for Chimera which did not bring out howls of protest - but given Ference's salary (1.3 mil) - we might have to throw in Ferguson and get a draft pick in return. Getting Ference would also allow us to trade Laraque and not lose much in the way of toughness.
To Edmonton: Brad Ference, 4th round pick
To Phoenix: Jason Chimera, Scott Ferguson
I just have a quick question...I noticed that the Oilers have been rather successful in molding fringe players into decent defensemen. Some that I have in mind are Staios, Ulanov, Butenschon, Robertsson, Ferguson, and Brown. Despite an obvious lack of talent, the Oilers staff always seem to get the most out of them.
The question is, what are the similarities between the above mentioned six, and what style of defenseman are the easiest to mold for the Oilers? The reason I'm asking is that Ference could become another good defenseman if he fits in with the Oilers system.
