Congrats Shanny! :handclap:

Sakic and Shanahan. The two best choices.

I had a feeling...

that at some point this season he would be captain.

UAGoalieGuy 01-18-2007 12:33 PM

Way to go Shanny!

TaiMaiShu 01-18-2007 12:38 PM

Great pick! Even though there is a huge amount of first year allstars in the East.

:sarcasm: Lets hope this is the only time, otherwise we are in serious trouble.

Both solid choices, I aprove :)

I think that if Shanahan was the Captain of the Rangers, this team would play a bit better actually.

He is a very hard-working guy who always comes back to play D, he would hold guys accountable when they don't pick up their man!

I agree.. but this is Jagr's team... well it was in the beginning of the season

NYR94 01-18-2007 01:55 PM

Nice. I hope he does an interview during the All-Star game on the "stationary bike." ;)

Probably true, but you can't take it from Jagr now. Talk about another year of darkness.

JLHockeyKnight 01-18-2007 02:59 PM

Shanahan is new to the Rangers, and I feel he doesn't deserve the captaincy for the team yet. I think you should be with the team for at least a year and stay with them to show commitment to gain that position. As much as I think he would be the best fit for your team, even better than Jagr, I think he doesn't deserve it yet.

But for the all star game, definitely good choices on both ends.

Messier was the captain of the Ranger the first game he played for them after the trade.

Did not know that. But then again its Messier, I think in terms of leadership there's a huge difference between Messier and Shanahan.

Maybe so, BUT he did win the Mark Messier leadership award ;) :sarcasm:

I dunno, while Messier is often recognized as the example of leadership Shanahan is probably about close as anyone else could get.

but for better or worse this is Jagr's team. I know personally (even before this year) that concept always gave me mixed emotions but it is what it is.

Fletch 01-18-2007 03:57 PM

SBoB...

you can also add that the Rangers did not have a captain when Shanahan signed, and the guy who ended up being captain was not captain last season despite being on this team, which makes it even less unusual for Shanny to be captain.

shoothepuck 01-18-2007 04:14 PM

Captain Shanny sounds good.

Good point.

I think the whole captain thing is overrated. The Rangers had their best season in years last year and they had no captain. When things got tough we talked of the need for a captain. Then Jagr took the captaincy and we were thrilled. Now we want to give the C to Shanahan. It's all irrelevant.

The problems this team have run deeper than who is the captain (or if there is a captain at all).

The Big Apple 01-18-2007 04:22 PM

Congrats Shanny...

I agree and I don't. I think a captain doesn't magically make all the problems disappear, but I also think that any organization/team/group has a leader and that leader at the end of the day often sets the tone and mood for his team. Even if he as assistants that help, he is still the guy who is expected to lead.

As for the captain issue, I think there were a lot of concerns about Jagr taking the 'C' before the season started. Of course there are the sunshine brigades who would celebrate if the team fielded a team of mentally handicapped chimps, but I don't think a lot of those concerns really went away. They were always there, it was just more of a "we're between a rock and a hard place" with Jagr.

But that's the real problem with Jagr, situations whether good or bad are always on a tightrope. Personally it's one reason why I'm not sure Jagr will ever really lead a team to a championship.

True Blue Bleed Blue 01-18-2007 05:43 PM

As he should be! I won't go any further though...

danno2530 01-18-2007 06:59 PM

Congrats Shanny! Joe Sakic is a well-deserved choice as well.
