If The Rangers Never Made Any Trades...

I got this idea from the NHL Board, just wanted to see some of your thoughts on this. If the Rangers were just built on their drafts alone, their team would look something like this.

Petr Prucha-Marc Savard-Alexei Kovalev
Todd Marchant-Doug Weight-Tony Amonte
Sergei Nemchinov-Mike York-Niklas Sundstrom
Manny Malhotra-Dominic Moore-Ryan Hollweg

Eric Boulton
Jamie Lundmark

Marek Zidlicky-Sergei Zubov
Brian Leetch-Fedor Tyutin
Mattias Norstrom-Kim Johnsson

Marc Staal
Aaron Miller
Eric Cairns

Henrik Lundqvist
Johan Holmqvist

Al Montoya
Jason Labarbera
Dan Cloutier

Pretty terrible scoring depth with the forwards...but a solid defensive/checking team plus a very good blue line.

Yea thats if they resign the players they draft... Nice lineup though....

We're going strickly by draft picks here. We dont want to make this too confusing. No Free agency and no trades.

poeman 01-25-2007 01:31 AM

its ok... compare that to other teams if they never made trades

o damn.. first team im thinking of right now is pittsburgh and edmonton

Inferno 01-25-2007 01:31 AM

quick question Balej.

are all of these natural draft picks? or are any picks acquired by trades?

TomLaidlaw 01-25-2007 01:34 AM

Here is the one I came up with in the NHl section....

Alex Kovalev - Marc Savard - Tony Amonte
Nigel Dawes -Doug Weight - Petr Prucha
Dominic Moore-Mike York-Ryan Hollweg
Peter Ferraro-Christian Dube- Chris Ferraro

Mattias Norstrom - Sergei Zubov
Aaron Miller - Marek Zidlicky
Fedor Tyutin - Marc Staal

Henrik Lundqvist
Dan Cloutier

Ola 01-25-2007 02:32 AM

It have been a while now, but not all that long ago I heard reports of how NYR were the team with the most drafted players in the NHL.

n8 01-25-2007 02:46 AM

Ferraro twins? WT.F? Horse-eater? :shakehead

mine is (players currently playing)...

Petr Prucha-Marc Savard-Alexei Kovalev
Mike York-Doug Weight-Tony Amonte
Manny Malhotra-Todd Marchant-Dom Moore
Ryan Hollweg-Jamie Lundmark-Garth Murray

don't know if Jan Marek counts but he's probably at least an NHL talented player.

Dawes-Dubinsky-Callahan don't sound bad either!

Mattias Norstrom - Sergei Zubov
Aaron Miller - Marek Zidlicky
Fedor Tyutin - Kim Johnsson

extra - Eric Cairns (for Renney Goonery)

Henrik Lundqvist
Johan Holmqvist (doing quite well in Tampa right now)

In '87, the Rangers drafted "Simon Gagne" ;)

maybe with our long history. that wouldn't surprise me. If you look in JUST the 80s, names that I recall from the list are

Quote:

James Patrick, Jan Erixon, Peter Sundstrom, Beezer, Chris Kontos, Tomas Sandstrom, Corey Millen, Tony Granato, Kelly Miller, Dave Gagner, Ulf Nilsson, Terry Carkner, Paul Broten, Kjell Samuelsson, Kevin Miller, Ulf Dahlen, Mike Richter, Rudy Poeschek, Brian Leetch, Mark Janssens, Darren Turcotte, Jay More, Daniel Lacroix, Mike Sullivan, Troy Mallette, Tony Amonte, Dennis Vial, Steve Rice, Rob Zamuner, Louie DeBrusk, Jim Cummins, Aaron Miller, Joby Messier, & Roman Oksiuta.
Unforunately, the 90s and 00s haven't been so fruitful. And as you know, we traded most of those players from our team and most of them are retired by now. See how much smaller the list is despite nearly twice as many picks. :banghead:

Quote:

Doug Weight, Sergei Zubov, Sergei Nemchinov, Alexei Kovalev, Corey Hirsch, Peter Ferraro*, Mattias Nprstrom, Eric Cairns, Chris Ferraro*, Niklas Sundstrom, Todd Marchant, Dan Cloutier, Sylvain Blouin, Kim Johnsson, Christian Dube*, Marc Savard, Dale Purinton, Mike York, Johan Holmqvist, Manny Malhotra, Jason Labarbera, Tomas Kloucek, Jamie Lundmark, Dom Moore, Henrik Lundqvist, Dan Blackburn, Fedor Tyutin, Garth Murray, Marek Zidlicky, Ryan Hollweg, & Petr Prucha

* borderline NHL careers.

Ola 01-25-2007 04:01 AM

n8- If your count is correct thas 20 players currently in the NHL. Thats defenitly avg atleast, the avg is of course 20. Counting in that some make it without beeing drafted, that might make up the expansion factor.

Though I doubt 20 is league leading now.

shoothepuck 01-25-2007 07:30 AM

Zubov would look good back there now.

Zubov would look good here anytime in my book. Loved him playing here.

I think you would need....

to add some parameters - like say if the Rangers never made any trades what would today's lineup look like, and that would only include players that are currently active.

EDIT: with that in mind, here it goes (all drafted, or signed undrafted players - I think I like this lineup better than today's):

Prucha-Savard-Kovalev
Amonte-Weight-York
Dom Moore-Marchant-Callahan
Hollweg-Malhotra-Ortmeyer (he wasn't drafted, but I think he counts for this)

Norstrom-Zubov
Johnsson-Tyutin
Zidlicky-Baranka

Lundqvist
Cloutier

Doyle 01-25-2007 09:29 AM

Shouldn't Giguere count then?

You have a point, draftpicks traded away should be in there somehow. Though its hard, no gaurantee that we would have taken JSG for example, or Nikita A.

kovalev27hf 01-25-2007 09:47 AM

if the rangers never made any trades....................

they'd be the only team in the league to never do so

Edge 01-25-2007 11:09 AM

Problem is that players age. So by the time you added a Prucha and a Callahan you'd have a very aged Weight and Amonte.

That's the problem with the approach. Even if you did very well and got 3 NHL players in every draft who developed in a certain amount of time, it'd still take you 9 years to work your way through the roster assuming everything went right.

Factor in variables such as age and decline, injuries and development time and you don't have very much wiggle room. You'd also be changing your draft strategy because instead of finding the best player you're trying to find a player who plays a specific position every year.

You also run into a problem of what happens if you end up with an abundance of RW's but you need a defenseman? Not all positions are as easy to come by as others.

So in other words...you're not too big on make-believe? :D

Not really.

I understand Balej is just posing a question someone else did on another thread and is just curious as to feedback.

That's just my thoughts on the matter.

Ok you guys cant be putting savard and lundmark on the same team because if you keep savard you never get lundmark.also it still cant be as bad as the islanders trades the last 10 years what a team they would have if they kept there players and picks.

dumont chara redden Connolly Bertuzzi Green McCabe Torres Armstrong Brewer Orszagh Pyatt and the best trade ever that even beats the trade we did with la about 10 years back Luongo for Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha.

Yeah, this is all just hypothetically speaking obviously. I just made it real simple, saw who we drafted, and if they were still playing at some capacity, I threw the best guys into a lineup.

No one is comparing teams here. This certainly isn't a contest. All this is, is a hypothetical for the Rangers, just for fun.

lotus 01-25-2007 05:13 PM

Zubov still one of my favs. That man will shoot it off the pass even if a little kid was standing in the way of the shot !

I know. I was just busting your chops. "Clownin'" as they say in...in...well, I dunno where they say it. But someone does. And that's what I'm saying. :D

Edge 01-26-2007 01:24 PM

I personally always do that could've beens when I play pretend.

Like a lineup of Graves-Messier-Amonte, Shanahan-Gretzky-Kovalev
