Interesting ESPN poll...

basically 140 players from 30 teams responded to a survey asking such questions as best scorer, best coach, best goalie, etc. Thought it was interesting. Rangers didn't fare too well, although Hollweg and Kaspar got hits in the dirtiest player category, Lundqvist was in the top 10 of goalies, and Jagr was in the top 5 pure goal scorers.

Shanny also got mentioned for "WHICH CURRENT PLAYER WOULD MAKE THE BEST NHL COACH?" I would agree with that I think.

The Big Apple 01-25-2007 02:40 PM

Good Read, nice to see that shanny came in second on which players would make the best coach... Sakic was first...

I was about to say that...

From that point of view, I think that Shany should also be our captain, not Jagr

Wow, we're on the list, we came in TENTH PLACE in voting for most imtimidating fans.

Tenth place???

2% of the vote, while Calgary got 19% of the vote...huh? Philly and Montreal I understand, but every game I watch from Calgary sounds like it's taking place in a church. Toronto got a lot more votes than us too, I've been there...it's really quiet except when a goal is scored.

Yeah...here is another opinion everyone might enjoy, not sure if anyone saw this. Obviously, she didn't get a vote!

Actually, Bluenote...

my guess is that a lot of Edmonton players responded to the poll...

Forgot to mention Shanny - perhaps he should become a player-coach - Renney wasn't on the list...

JamesG1221 01-25-2007 03:28 PM

Renney wasn't on the list...

Guess some of the players polled included Witt and Pandalfo...;)

Phaneuf is a freaking hockey god.

I was disappointed to see NYR fans only got 2% of the voting for the "Most Intimidating" poll...that playoff drought had to have hurt...

I'm not surprised, the Garden has become so passive over the last few years it's pathetic.

Calgary and the sea of red to me is a site to behold and I'd have to say that they should be the most intimidating.

Philly is scary, but to me, seeing 15-20 thousand folks in red going crazy is a bit un-nerving

Dude, wearing red is one thing, but Calgary fans do not go crazy. Calgary's 18,000 fans are as quiet as the Devils 8,000 fans.

Colton Orr-Bruin fans loved the guy and NHL players and coaches consider him one of the toughest in the league. Renney likes him and so do the Ranger players. but HF post-maniacs call him a unskilled goon who can't win a fight or intimidate anybody?? The Rangers have huge holes (second line center, defense, team chemistry, and GRIT). On this board its all Colton Orrs fault........................;)
Ryan Hollweg-I guess i'm a homer because I really don't see him as a dirty player. My Fishstick, and Debby friends say he is.
I always like these polls because to me you can take a lot of credence on opinions from people who are closest to the puck. Ask any player (except for maybe Avery, and Brashear) and they will tell you that respect from the coaches, players and GMs that they compete with and against is very important to them. And of course their checkbooks. That respect gets you contracts.

Someone is actually afraid of Colton Orr? :dunno:

Geogaddi 01-25-2007 06:18 PM

My Choices. Lets see yours.

Natural Scorer: Alexander Ovechkin
Toughest Player: Derek Boogard
Best Coach: Lindy Ruff
1st player to pick: Sidney Crosby
Game 7 Goalie: Martin Brodeur
Intimidating Fans: Philadelpia Flyers
Dirtiest Player: Jarkko Ruutu
Hardest Hitter: Dion Phaneuf
Fastest Skater: Marian Gaborik
Coach/WWE cage match: Ted Nolan :dunno:
Best Overall Athlete: Scott Niedermayer
Best Coach: Scott Mellanby

broadwayblue 01-25-2007 07:56 PM

One result that seemed odd to me...Brodeur was #2 on the 1st player to pick to start a franchise w/ 11%. I'm not bashing him by any means, but really, wouldn't you want to pick a guy you could building around for 10 years or more? Isn't Brodeur going to be 35 in a few months? I'm sure he could give a team a great 5 years or so, but how long do people think he's going to be an all-star calibre goalie?

BigE 01-25-2007 08:05 PM

Colton Orr actually got a couple votes as toughest fighter...

Dagoon44 01-25-2007 08:11 PM

Colton Orr, Rangers (2%) Thats right folks player from around the league know that he can hurt people with that right hand. I bet ROY,Goddard, Boulton voted lol

WhipNash27 01-25-2007 08:16 PM

2% said MSG was the most intimidating.

Unfortunately MSG has been becoming more tame every year. I wish I was around to see the days of the blue seats

It was a fun time...... If you wore an Islander jersey into the garden, you might not be wearing it out, and if you did there were many times that a bit of red was added to the blue and orange. Man the 70s were great.
