Glen Hanlon takes over as Caps coach

Cassidy is a good young coach, he was put in a bad spot and made some rookie mistakes that cost him his job.

Quick, whats Glen Hanlon's claim to fame? Besides giving up that damn goal to Morrow

Gave up Gretzky's first goal and was quoted years later as saying he created a monster

The Caps are kinda like the Rangers, long on talent, egos and salary, short on heart, guts and brains. It's the coach that gets canned because you can't fire 20+ players, but Cassidy isn't really to blame. I agree with what Melrose said the other night, that it sends the message that the coach is the reason the team stinks and absolves the players of blame. That team needs a major housecleaning.

I think that's partially true...

too often you can't fire the players. Yeah, you can replace them with young, hungry guys, but that alone doesn't translate to wins and you may end up rushing guys who aren't ready to be playing in the NHL. So what's your option? Fire the coach. If it's a coach liked by the team, well, hopefully they feel remorse because 9 times out of 10 they realize it was them that sucked and they get off their collective arses and get going. Heck, Jersey fired Ftorek when the team was tops in the league and in a bit of a funk in March, and ended up champions. It's a last-ditch effort when you realize there's not much more to do.
