Buyers or Sellers?

Habs lose a very important game against Long Island this afternoon and now find themselves tied for that final 8th spot in the East. Toronto has the opportunity to reduce the margin with a victory against last place Philly tonight. Carolina who was bumped out of that 8th spot by New York today, added some offence on their off-day by acquiring Anson Carter, the former 32 goal scorer and they find themselves playing a tough opponent in Atlanta today who has played 63 games thus far and good for 6th place in the east with 72 points.

Our once 4th place Habs (second overal in points in the east), now find themselves fighting for their playoff lives and the question arises, Should Gainey make a push for the playoffs by acquiring some rentals or should he take advantage of the opportunity and trade away some of the players that the team may face the risk of losing over the off season? You be the judge.

Rivet - Souray - Kovalev sell them NOW!

Blind Gardien 02-24-2007 03:56 PM

Buyers... but bargain hunters. Gainey already stated unequivocably that he isn't giving up youth. That's good. It means we won't be buyers on the large scale. We're also not going to be sellers, we're in the playoff race. Hence, we might look for the right bargain here or there, or maybe keep hoping we can unload one of our own little headaches, but otherwise, I don't think we fit the traditional "buyers" or "sellers" categories. As much as that will pain the habarazzi.

I just don't even know who they should get. At first it was scoring that was needed, now it's a defenceman too. BG is going to have a tough time.

Us being around 8th is the worst possible thing for the future of this org. No wonder why we're still a 8th place team every year, 'cause every year, we're around that spot and we can't make a move 'cause we're not out but not in.....

I'm in the sellers mode big time, we don't have the energy team to go far in the playoffs. Some would say the Oilers, well I would tell you that if as a team they had the same talent that we have right now, they were grittier and had more energy to compensate for the talent level, which we don't.

Today was a playoff game where everything was tougher to gain, and we couldn't follow the pace for a whole 60 minutes.

By the way, how many passes will Markov get if Souray's gone????

What will really happen? Total status quo.

Live Forever 02-24-2007 03:59 PM

If we are buyers, I wonder what is on Gainey's Wishlist?

1 serving of Joe Sakic, followed up with a side order of Mathieu Garon ?

Dr_Hook 02-24-2007 03:59 PM

I agree with selling Rivet and Souray, IF he can't be signed ; and with BobG stupid non-negociations during the season he won't be, so trade him ASAP.

Kovalev wouldn't be easy to "sell", but if someone wants to take him, please do.

+ samsonov, if we can get him out without taking a stoopid deal in return, ala Aucoin ; in that case I'd rather hold on to him

The organisation doesn't change strategy after each game.

That was not "every" game we just played.

True.
Too close to a playoffs spot each year to go into the sellers camp.

But it's time to make a move this year because we clearly need to improve. We can't win a series against another team than the Bruins anyway.

Since it's pretty obvious we would not play the Bruins in the first round this year I say it's time to sell.

Just one out of 82.

Of course I understand fans think differently, I'm offering the organisation's perspective.

Kirk Muller 02-24-2007 04:53 PM

If you don't resign Souray or Markov before the deadline, i think one or the other has to be traded and receive value for them. Simply for the fact of maximizing assets, especially when you are far from a lock for the playoffs.

Also, if someone would take Kovalev, i'd be happy to see him leave. For the shear cap space, and honestly i am tired of his lacksadaisical play.

Nakamura 02-24-2007 04:53 PM

Bob has to sell Souray.. his value is so high we have to take advantage of it..

But I wouldn't be surprised if Bob gets a marginal forward and a veteran goaltender ŕ la Belfour.

Louis Houde 02-24-2007 05:34 PM

Please bob,
trade Souray for Luc Bourdon
trade Markov for Kristopher Letang
trade kovalev for a 5th round pick like Carter
trade Rivet for an infamous 2nd round pick.
trade Komisarek to Islanders for Kyle Okposo
re-buy Samsonov's contract
Do not re-sign Bonk,Souray,Markov,Johnson,Rivet,Niinimaa and Aebischer

Let the habs pick Yann Sauvé first overall in 2008 draft.
