Will Ortmeyer Eventually Become a Rangers Captain?

Yes or No. I think he will. He provides leadership grit and determination. Didnt Messier say he would be a few years ago?

Ola 03-08-2007 04:16 PM

Teams in the NHL are always horny to make their stars Captains, I don't really get that.

They are supposed to lead on the ice, aren't that pressure enough?

Some stars make tremendous captains, some don't, I defenitly don't think there is any fault in making a player like Orts captain.

EvilCorporateLawyer 03-08-2007 04:17 PM

No.

Though he will be an assistant captain soon enough, IMO.

I agree. I bet he's wearing the A next season or the season after.

I agree with you...but, there's a lot of distance between a teams' star and a marginal 3rd line player.

no. probably not as a ranger. hes definately a fan favorite, and one of mine, but the way this team brings in new stars every few years, i think he will have to settle for the A. that doesnt mean im discrediting his leadership ability. i dont think he is captain material. captains are supposed to make thier team believe thay can win in any situation (messier's hat trick in the 94 finals), and i just dont think he can pull it off.

FLYLine24 03-08-2007 04:32 PM

Not the C, but the A in the future.

cringer 03-08-2007 04:33 PM

No.

BigE 03-08-2007 05:01 PM

I can't see him being captain of this club.

nyr2k2 03-08-2007 05:15 PM

I think he'll certainly be an A, but as most have said probably not a C. I also don't know that he's in the long-term plans for the franchise, what with all the kids being near-ready in the next year or so. I love Jed, I have two of his sweaters and he's one of my faves, but I just get the sense that we'd be willing to move on if someone pushes him for his spot.

Bluenote13 03-08-2007 05:16 PM

Your Captain should be someone who gets at least 17 or 18 mins of icetime a game, IMO.

lotus 03-08-2007 05:20 PM

an A for sure but that's it. Even if he deserves the C more than someone like Jags.

roxchipsi8 03-08-2007 05:30 PM

Highest he'll get is an A. He doesn't get anough ice time to be a captain. That being said, a player doesn't need to be designated a captain to be a leader. Watching the team play, you can tell that he really sets an example along with prucha with their constant hustle.

Inferno 03-08-2007 05:52 PM

no, i dont even think he will be a Ranger in 2-3 years.

SML 03-08-2007 05:54 PM

I would like to see them resign him before I answer.

ThirdEye 03-08-2007 05:55 PM

Um, definitely not

jas 03-08-2007 05:59 PM

Not with the likes of Staal, Sauer, Pyatt and Dupont on the way.

TomLaidlaw 03-08-2007 06:18 PM

I'd like to see him hit the net before we crown him captain

Janerixon 03-08-2007 06:25 PM

I can't see him being the captain until he learns to finish and put up some points, he is a good player and his work ethic and hustle are great attributes, however a captain should be someone who can lead his team to victory ie mess, mario, gretz, jagr, elias, etc

sometimes its different for example a defensemen like scott stevens, but that is a defensemen and stevens was very capable of shutting down teams top players enabling his team to win

just don't see orts ever fitting that mold at this level, maybe an A

bar down* 03-08-2007 06:25 PM

If he doesnt resign i see him going to st.louis with jd. jd likes him a lot.

shoothepuck 03-08-2007 06:36 PM

No. Let's see if he even gets resigned before an A is mentioned.

No way he might not even be in NHL in 2 years. He is all heart and the NHL doesn't like that

007 03-08-2007 06:49 PM

No, he doesn't have enough skill. It's not unprecedented that a 3rd/4th line player gets the 'C' (thinking of Kelly Buchburger), but it does count against him. I'm with Bluenote, even if he is respected and a fan favourite, the captain should be on the ice more.

That said, if he does get the 'C', I think it would be a popular choice and not without merit. What would be good about having him as the Captain would be that he could be "Mr. Ranger", a solid base to the team, even if there is a revolving door for the star players.

True Blue Bleed Blue 03-08-2007 11:20 PM

Ehh....as much as he hustles...you really do need to have a bit more skill in order to be wearing that C..or at least I think so
