What about Graves as coach?

With all of this talk about Messier potentially becoming GM (which i am unsure about), what do you guys think of having Adam Graves groomed to replace Renney?

I don't think he can do any worse.

The Thomas J.* 03-16-2007 10:16 AM

Graves is too much of a nice guy, it wont work.

I don't think its out of the realm of possibility....but I think Graves will need alot of time apprenticing at the minor league level. At this point, I think even Nick Fotiu is more qualified to coach !

Has Graves coached in any capacity at any level, yet?

Not at all. These days i think it is exactly what we need.

In The Flesh 03-16-2007 10:58 AM

I don't think he could be that much worse, then again I don't think Renney's that bad.

Renney's not going anywhere anyway.

Nich 03-16-2007 11:26 AM

eh leave him the player development role. great guy for players to use as a contact within our organization, and from i heard, all the young guys love him. so he is already doing A+ work.

Fletch 03-16-2007 11:30 AM

Can see him as an assistant...

or a guy who comes in and helps out here and there but has a full time job elsewhere in the organization. I think he would work great with kids and could only be an asset, if used properly of course.

Kodiak 03-16-2007 12:00 PM

Graves could coach in the future, but I see him as more useful in a player development/mentoring role and a community relations role.

I think Graves would be great, no doubt, but I dont think Graves has it in him to be a ***** when he really has to, i mean he had a mean streak when he played, but, as a coach Im not sure if he could act like a dick if he really had to, I just dont see it in him.

i would say start him in Hrtfd as an assistant coach, and in time moe him up to the NHL.

Bluenote13 03-16-2007 12:16 PM

Its a myth that great coaches need to be drill sargents.

Let him learn the ropes as an assistant somewhere first, then we'll talk.....

SingnBluesOnBroadway 03-16-2007 12:25 PM

There's nothing wrong with the coach we have.

in the hall 03-16-2007 12:26 PM

i don't think this is something graves wants anyway

wouldn't like it either to be honest

You mean you don't think he's a moron, and should be fired? But, he's the only reason this team isn't on its way to having the best record in the league. And, he's just a puppet for Jagr.

All joking aside, to say that a guy like Gravey with ZERO experience in coaching can step in and do a better job than Renney is not only a slap in the face to our coaching staff, but is a slap in the face to every coach in the league.

I love Adam; he's a fantastic guy, a great motivator and friend, and IMHO, his number should be up in the rafters. HOWEVER, he's got a ways to go before we start considering him an option behind the bench. I have no problem with him getting his feet wet coaching juniors or in the AHL, but until then, lets not equate a guy who has no prior experience coaching with ours. Renney is not THAT bad.

nyr7andcounting 03-16-2007 02:04 PM

Great assistant I bet, not mean enough to be a head coach.

Coach of whom? A team in the Ice Hockey in Harlem League? Yes!

Get ready then for 14 years of no playoff hockey.

Hockeyplayer99 03-18-2007 03:53 PM

No way do I want Graves as a coach for this team. Imagine Rangers not playing well under Graves and you hear the fire Graves chant. That would just not feel right. He has done so much for this orginization as a player and now after he has retired. To think him coaching here not being succesful and the fans chanting for his head.

I agree, I wouldn't mind him having him in a John MacLean type position as an assistant. BTW, did John Maclean undertake any other organizational position w/ the Devs before joining as an assistant. Perhaps he could follow that route. This is all speculation ofcourse, he prob doesn't even want such a job.

NYR94 03-18-2007 06:36 PM

He's such a great guy in terms of community relations and charity work that I don't know if I'd even want him behind the bench. Coaching just takes up all of your time. He wouldn't have any left to help all the people he does.

SingnBluesOnBroadway 03-18-2007 07:10 PM

I'm not sure he would want to coach. He has a great gig with the Rangers doing what is truly his passion. He is able to live in Toronto. There's nothing to show me that he has any interest in coaching. Especially as he is yet to explore any coaching opportunities (be it as an assistant or in the AHL or in juniors).
