Flyers Trade Forward Eric Chouinard to Minnesota

Philadelphia gets fifth round pick in 2004

The Philadelphia Flyers today announced that they have traded forward Eric Chouinard (shwee-NAHR) to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for a fifth round pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, according to General Manager Bob Clarke.

“With the acquisition of (Mike) Comrie, there just wasn’t going to be any ice time or any place to play Eric,“ said Clarke in making the announcement. “We felt that for our team and for Eric that it’s better he goes somewhere else where he gets a chance to play.”

Chouinard, 23, scored three goals in 17 games for the Flyers this season. He was also scoreless in one game for the Flyers’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms, this season. In 45 regular season games with the Flyers, Chouinard recorded seven goals and four assists for 11 points and eight penalty minutes. He was acquired by the Flyers from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for a second round pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft on January 29, 2003. In 58 career NHL games over parts of three seasons with Montreal and the Flyers (2000-01, 2002-03 and 2003-04), the 6’3”, 215-pound forward has registered eight goals and seven assists for 15 points and eight penalty minutes. He was originally drafted by the Canadiens in the first round (16th overall) of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.

Huh. Well. I guess since Marc's out with some weird throat virus, Riser figured he'd pick up the cousin. ;)

Will we see him on the Wild at all? Suppose he's headed to the Aeros?

He was a former first rounder, right? (edit: Well, duh.. reading comprehension is not my strong skill today, obviously :))

Is it just me, or are we going to have 2 Chouinard's now? That's funny stuff

We need new blood in the big club, hopefully he stays with the Wild.

GAH!!!!

QUIT TRADING FOR USELESS CRAP RISEBROUGH!

Unless you're moving Eric and Darby down and bringing up a rookie, I'm officially TICKED.

Then we would have three Choiunard's to the 'Nucks' two Sedins. Method to the madness? :handclap:

Mathieu sorry and he's not that good :D

call it the CBC line... the HNIC guys would get a real laugh out of that one! Eric's a smart guy, he'll take some time to get into the system, but i believe that he'll be a useful player for you guys if you are patient with him.

ceber 12-17-2003 12:41 PM

CBC line is nice... I'd call it the boosh and 'nards line, myself. Maybe not in public, though. :)

They can't send him to the Aeros without him clearing waivers again. And we still have 25 players. Someone still has to be waived or sent down. Maybe we can get away with one because Burns is away but when Chouinard comes back someone has to go. The only one who doesn't have to clear waivers is Brandner.

:yo: :yo:

Or traded. It's an option, however unlikely. :)

If someone gets sent down, I think Brandner is a pretty good suspect. I really would like to see him stay up and play more. He looks like he just needs to get over a little hump and he'd really be great for us. But it seems to be a pretty easy choice if someone has to go to Houston. He's not been producing much, and you get to keep him in the system.

Who else is an option?

FearTheFlyers 12-17-2003 01:59 PM

He seems like a good player that should help you guys a lot. He was never given a fair chance here despite showing promise.

easton122 12-17-2003 02:05 PM

Don't doubt Chouinard's numbers this year he was barely getting any ice time playing with Lapointe and Fedoruk mostly. He is a potential 20 goal 40 point player IMO if given enough ice time. He wasn't getting enough ice time with the Flyers this season so hopefully the Wild can give him some decent time.

tiredman 12-17-2003 03:48 PM

I've seen Eric Chouinard playing when he was with the Remparts de Québec and he is a really good player. He is only underestimated.

-Montreal didn't gives him a chance
-Philadelphia was using him on the 4th line

Interesting article on Chouinard at the beginning of the season:

http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/030913/6/uo2g.html

Ken Hitchcock's description: "He's a legitimate, big-time scorer."

Hmm....

Good find Bookman! This trade is looking better and better each day. We could sure use a big forward that can put the puck in the net!

ceber 12-18-2003 01:03 PM

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing him skate with the rest of the team. I gotta wonder though, if Hitchcock was so 'up' on him, why does it sound like he wasn't getting the ice time? And there's this quote, too: "...we have to get him with a guy who can get him the puck." From what I've read from some Philly fans, this wasn't happening. 'Course, coaches say a lot of things and obviously things change pretty quickly. Hopefully we've scored a good one here. Put me down for "cautiously optimistic."

:)

Blackadder 12-18-2003 01:56 PM

Clarke also feels we got the better end of the deal, which says something I guess:

Quote:

The Flyers traded for Edmonton center Mike Comrie on Tuesday, and GM Bobby Clarke said it would have been tough for Chouinard to get any playing time. Clarke also said his hand was forced by the NHL's eight-day holiday roster freeze later this week.

"Minnesota got a better deal than we did," Clarke told Philadelphia reporters.

Totally agree. Now with Wanvig up though, hopefully everybody gets a fair look. :dunno:

Or he could of tried to find another team that would've paid more for Chouinard OR he could've kept Chouinard...
