Tripp vs. Barney
Tripp vs. Barney
This is the question... Who has been the better player this season? Who do you think has more potentail upside?
This is a question mainly for people who follow the Manchester Monarchs or have seen both play in the AHL. I haven't.
Even if you haven't seen either of them play feel free to share your opinion, just don't pretend like your an expert.
Both are big guys...
Tripp is more physical, and was streaky in terms of production as we were told to expect. Not a great skater, but not bad for someone his size.
Barney is only starting to come around physically, but has a better scoring touch than Tripp.
IMO, Barney has the higher upside and is a little bit younger than Tripp. Hopefully his back can hold up and he can continue to grow more physical. He did have a fighting major last weekend.
it's not even CLOSE to being a question when you use the word "UPSIDE"
John Tripp has NO upside. He's a journeyman minor leaguer who has already floated in and out of a few NHL organizations, but he plugs a hole with Manchester, and for no apparent reason (other than the fact that the Kings were in need of a warm body that happened to be over 6 feet tall) was given a shot with the Kings, where he proved what he proved last year with the Rangers... that his game is more suited to the AHL than the NHL... and probably even MORE suited to the ECHL, but fine... let him be an AHL guy for another year or two and then go to Europe and have a nice life.
Scott Barney has all the upside in the world, and if he can play more consistently and match his size with some strength and some grit in front of the net, he can be a legitimate NHL player for years to come. Just give him time, and let him play a full season in Manchester, and hope there's hockey next year. If he can pot 30-40 goals in the AHL, he can come in next season, brimming with confidence. To bring him up now, IMO, would be a huge mistake, because the Kings wouldn't be able to give him enough ice time to really prove that he belongs over the long haul.
(and I'm NOT pretending :) )
