Gameday: Devils at Sabres 12/19

VENUE: HSBC Arena

GAME: New Jersey Devils (17-6-7-0) at Buffalo Sabres (12-17-2-1).

TIME: Friday, 8 p.m. EST.

Riding the strong goaltending of Martin Brodeur, the defending Stanley Cup champion New Jersey Devils visit the struggling Buffalo Sabres as they continue a five-game road trip. The Devils are 2-1 on the trip thus far, including Thursday's 3-0 victory at Atlanta. New Jersey is unbeaten in six of its last seven games overall, and Brodeur has four shutouts during that stretch.

Brodeur earned his league-leading eighth shutout of the season and 72nd of his career Thursday. His career total is the highest by any active goaltender, 31 short of Terry Sawchuk's all-time NHL record. Brodeur could also challenge the record for shutouts in a season, set by George Hainsworth, who posted 22 in a 44-game season in 1928-29. The post-expansion record of 15 was set by Tony Esposito in 1969-70.

The Sabres are beginning a three-game homestand after losing their sixth in a row with Tuesday's 2-1 defeat at Pittsburgh. Miroslav Satan provided the lone goal for Buffalo, which hasn't scored more than two goals in any game during its skid. The Sabres are last in the Northeast Division with just 27 points. Only three other teams in the Eastern Conference have accumulated less points.

Ruff admitted he's angry at his players. "It's easy to lose hope," Ruff said. "It's easy for players to push it off and blame goaltending, maybe a bad goal here or there. The bottom line is you gotta battle through situations, and I don't think we have as individuals battled through those situations. The players have to hold themselves accountable from our forwards with the amount of goal scoring. Offensively, we haven't had guys pay a big enough price to score goals."

Goalie Martin Biron will get his first start in two weeks, and defenseman Jay McKee should be available after missing 13 games with a sprained left knee.

The Devils are unbeaten in the last six meetings (4-0-2) with the Sabres.

3-1 Devils

Prove me wrong boys....prove me wrong

Ruckus007 12-19-2003 09:49 AM

McKee back, Biron likely starting, Briere-Dumont-Hecht broken up (all per WNSA), but I'm not going to be negative, I'm just not going to predict the score. 14000 in the stands if we're lucky.

Make that 7-0.

Devils 5 Sabres 1
NJ - Elias (2), Gionta (2), Rafalski
BUF - Briere

eSabre 12-19-2003 02:27 PM

Sabres 4
Devils 0

Dominant performance by Martin Biron, and BHD clicks for 3 goals, with Kotalik adding the other.

...and EVERYONE QUITS *****ING :)

I'm going with a 4 - 2, maybe 3 - 2 Sabres victory. We have to show up tonight.

lecherous 12-19-2003 06:17 PM

That was a pretty sad showing in goal by Biron. I finally realized that he makes so many acrobatic saves simply because he's always out of position, and every once in awhile he gets himself back and it ends up looking spectacular.

I was going to say no way will the Devils get 5 goals in this one before the board froze up tonight, but you just about called the score perfectly. Nice work on calling Gionta's goals.

Hey, I had to gamble with that one... Someone's got to be positive... and if I was close to right I would have looked like a genius... Kotalik scored though ;)
