Ortmeyer

you guys just signed him off of my rangers

the reason we didnt resign him is cuz there was a conflict between him and managment, he filed a grievance against them for failing to pay his signing bonus, pretty bad stuff on our part

you guys are fortunate, he is a real good energy PKer who can throw the body

good luck with him, wishing nashville the best

nyrage 07-01-2007 10:23 PM

Rangers fans are definitely sad to see him go. He can't score, but he's a great penalty killer and high-energy guy. He has a ton of heart and always play hard. Best of luck Orts.

Jarnberg 07-01-2007 10:26 PM

If Ortmeyer was being signed to play on our fourth line, then I'd be all for it. He's going to be getting third line minutes though. We need a very strong, two-way third line. This doesn't do it for us.

BlairBettsBlocks 07-01-2007 10:57 PM

just wait and see him though

he just has a way of getting you to like him

he has good speed, plays with alot of effort, and is a good PKer

he will grow on the preds fans

NYReign 07-01-2007 11:27 PM

Best of luck to Jed in Nashville. He was always one of my favorite Rangers and I hope he finds success with the Preds. Losing him, even though we knew it was coming, was a sad end to a great day in Rangerland.

lotus 07-02-2007 12:40 AM

You really got to wait and see him, he is such a hard worker you cant dislike the guy. Heart and soul game in game out. If you're down 7-0 and he's out there on the pk, he will drop down and block a shot at point blank range from Sheldon Souray any day of the week irregardless of any situation.

I'm going to really miss the guy, alot. And it's not like he has zero offensive skills, they're just not amazing. But when he can take a shot he'll put it on goal quick. It's a good pickup, best of luck.

PeterAngelo 07-02-2007 03:27 AM

hey i love this signing, as evidenced by my avatar. Maybe its to do with the fact that i didnt think we would sign anyone this offseason, meh whatever...go ortmeyer!

eco's bones 07-02-2007 07:22 AM

Orts can skate and pk really well. He's just not a guy who is going to put points up. He is all heart though and absolutely fearless. He hits and there isn't anybodys shot he won't throw himself in front of. His courage is amazing.

RollingPredFan 07-02-2007 07:36 AM

Well everything I have heard about him is good! But it seems like we have too many PK specialist and energy guys now LOL. I hope we can pick up someone who can score and have a 2 way game. Maybe we could trade Tootoo :p:

JussiM 07-02-2007 09:17 AM

I suppose this is a good signing but they do have awful lot of these 4th-line-grinder types under contract... Interesting to see how they're going to get to the cap floor.

A bit offtopic: anyone thought about the possibility that they might end up taking some goalie with a bad contract as a backup? There should be plenty of those available.

Jarnberg 07-02-2007 09:20 AM

We have a long way to go to reach the salary floor.

Not too many 'holes' in terms of roster spots on the team now.

I'm betting that we acquire a high priced cast off from another team in a trade, since its unlikely that we get anyone thru free agency unless we REALLY over pay them.

lstcyr 07-02-2007 11:07 AM

when do we have to be at the cap floor? September 30 or by the end of the year?

Olaf 07-02-2007 03:28 PM

I guess Poile will wait for arbitrations and see if another Dumont type scenario comes about in order to hit the cap.

im now a partial nashville fan because ortmeyer is now yours. he brings tremendous pride, heart, and guts to your team. ranger fans may not like him because of his scoring ability but the thing is, he was there to score. he makes himself available to scoring chances and sooner or later he'll score. guarantee you he'll be either a captain or assistant captain in the next couple of years. you guys got him for a steal and youll love him. it sucks though, because i just got his jersey with the rangers, now ill have to get a nashville one. oh well, their jerserys are cooler than ny's. congrats.

I'm happy! He was one of my favorite Rangers, not that I was a big Ranger fan or anything, but he was one I liked to watch.

I guess he was just following the Grateful Dead song... "...you better head back to Tennessee, Jed." ;)

His a midwestern boy too. Jed is an all heart, all balls type of player. His penalty killing and shot blocking is second to none, and he's a guy that I'd want to be in a foxhole with. This kid is going to grow on a lot of you guys and in a few months when I check back, i'm sure he will have gained a cult following. He will certainly be missed in NY, and I hope that him, and the Preds have a good year.

Take care folks!

NYRSinceBirth 07-03-2007 10:17 AM

I think all these Ranger fans coming here and talking about Jed speaks for itself. You may have a bunch of 4th line gritty/heart players, but non of them measure up to Orts. I'm not saying I'd build a team around the guy, but he has a place on any team in any league. Godd pick up, really good pickup. Even with NYR's draft and FA day, I'm still a little unhappy we lost Jed.

I like his heart & PK ability as well (got to watch Ranger games on Saturday afternoons before I went down to the Arena) and I agree with every Ranger fan on why they're going to miss Jed

PeterAngelo 07-04-2007 03:39 AM

Ortmeyer, (shorthanded), (unassisted)

has a nice ring to it....

Carlos Ranger 07-04-2007 04:30 AM

Orts was such a fan favorite here.. partially among girls who found him attractive, but still, his work ethic and heart is second to none and he's a natural leader, and fearless. Despite not having a knack for scoring, he can chip in a few, he's not incapable of it like some 4th liners.

As many have already said, we'll greatly miss him, but I wish him the best, and you guys will love him, and some already do, I see.;)

lundy 07-05-2007 11:09 PM

Let me just add to the praise that my fellow Rangers fans have given Jed. He was absolutely, hands down, my favorite player on the team for the past few years. His heart was unparalleled. The guy would gladly take a slapper to the eye if it would help the team. You'll love him,he's a beast on the penalty kill, and he should be good for 15-20 points. I wish the Rangers resigned him, but Nashville just got a champion.

As a female, I agree and that is one reason I liked him in the first place. ;)

But I also like his game and how he was able to come back after everything last season.

jstreet 07-07-2007 12:07 PM

Ort was lured here by promises of moving from the Rangers 4th line to the Preds 3rd line.

-as per the Titansean.

Seth Lake 07-07-2007 01:13 PM

Sorry, haven't been around since the draft. I'm actually in CT with my aunt while my uncle is in a nursing home after having a seizure during the third round of the draft. Thankfully he is doing very good and should be home Wednesday. I'll be home Saturday or Sunday of next week and will become quite a frequent poster again. For now, I have extremely limited access to the internet.

As for the Ortmeyer signing...it is a great move. One that I made in the Free Agent Game too.

I first saw Jed in Hartford (AHL) making his professional debut with the Rangers affiliate. He made an immediate impact as a two-way energy guy and was clearly headed to the NHL in short time. I agree with the opinion of many Ranger fans that Jed will become a captain within a year or two, as he is the ultimate lead by example type of leader and is known as having good chemistry with his teammates.

As I feared, Jed will get third line minutes (pending another signing or two), and he does not have much offensive upside, but he is the type of player that will only serve to make his linemates better and I believe he will help his teammates reach their offensive potential although he himself will not put up big numbers.

Great PK guy, will drop in front of anything and will battle Zanon tooth and nail for the team lead in blocked shots and ice bags.

Jed and the Predators see this as an opportunity to give a role player a bigger role to see if he can adapt. Having followed Jed's career, I think that he has the personality and determination to do his best and will strive very hard to meet any expectations that are placed on him by the club.

Ortmeyer will be a fan favorite from his first shift. This is a player that will not quit regardless of the circumstances and I really believe he will be a bright spot this season.
