Weber Vs Phaneuf

Who would you rather have locked up for the next 6 yrs.....Weber of Phaneuf?

ryz 07-14-2007 10:01 AM

Weber is one of the best young Dmen in the NHL, but Phaneuf might be the best.

Phaneuf

First 2 seasons in the league head-to-head (for comparison sake)

Weber 107 GP 19 G 31 A 50 PT +21 102 PIM (198 shots) - Physical Monster
Phaneuf 161 GP 37 G 62 A 99 PT +15 191 PIM (472 shots) - Physical Monster

I'd personally go for Weber by a whisker. Weber wont put up as many points but he is better defensively and although i haven't seen a huge amount of either of them i'd say looking at the PIM that Weber takes less stupid penalties while still playing a good physical game. Phaneuf has a cannon of a shot but he needs to improve his accuracy i mean 37 goals on 472 shots is pretty awful. Weber needs to take more shots he doesn't even average 2 shots a game. If he started to shoot more his offensive stats may increase.

Weber.

Jimmi McJenkins 07-14-2007 11:45 AM

Weber for me, he's better defensively and has a very similar offensive game.

State of Hockey 07-14-2007 01:30 PM

Phanuef. He'll eventully learn how to defend better on the PP. Otherwise he's a monster.

hockeyfan125 07-14-2007 01:32 PM

Weber. I think he has the potential to be a better Adam Foote.

MonaHan Solo 07-14-2007 01:32 PM

Phaneuf.

Don't let that PIM stat fool you....he fought a lot last year so that is the reason.

Phaneuf had 5 fights this year and he fought once last year.

Weber had 4 fights this year (including one linked game misconduct) and none last year.

Phaneuf has potential to go far higher than that.

detredWINgs 07-14-2007 03:08 PM

I used to think it was Phaneuf. Then I paid a little more attention to Weber when the Wings were playing Nashville. Wow.

Id take Weber in a heartbeat.

silkyjohnson50* 07-14-2007 04:14 PM

Yeah, Phaneuf is still a stud without a doubt, but the more i watched Weber the more impressed i came away. I think the sky's the limit with him - both of them really - but i'd probably take Weber by a hair.

Towelie* 07-14-2007 04:50 PM

Weber for me, and this is something I have thought since they both played in the WHL. Weber thinks the game better then Phaneuf, and becuase of this, is a better defensive player.

Phaneuf with shot % of 12.76%.
Weber with a shot % of 10.42%.

Not quite sure what you're talking about here. Phaneuf has a better shot % than Weber by 2.34%. That is pretty awful..:sarcasm:

Phaneuf

Not sure how you worked out his shooting % but you did it wrong.

37/472 x 100 = 7.8%

Phaneuf's shooting % is 7.8 for his career and 7.4 for this year. Weber's shooting % is 9.2 for his career and 11.2 for this year. So if Weber took as many shots as Phaneuf he would score more goals.....

That may have been phrased wrong. I didn't say he would score more than Phaneuf i'm just saying if Weber shot more he would get more points than he currently has.

uh, 37 goals on 472 shots is not awful. He also had 62 assists, and defensemen take alot of shots just to get a rebound out there or bounce them off the boards and create garbage for the guys parked hin front or for them to tip them etc.

Your post does not take into account the semantics of actualy playing. Its just an assumption based on stats. Trust me. Coaches teach you not only to shoot for the top corner, but how to create garbage for the guys to pick up.
