Gelinas a Pred

:yo:

Very solid signing for the third line, can step up to a scoring line as an injury replacement

Poile Surprises Us Again

Apparently the Predators have just signed Martin Gelinas to a one-year contract this afternoon.

Pretty good pickup on a one yr deal. Not bad...

Stranger 07-26-2007 12:52 PM

Much better option then Fiddler on the third line...

I don't think it means Fiddler is bumped down. i think we're falsely assuming Ortmeyer will be on the third line.

Radulov Legwand Erat
Sullivan Arnott Dumont
Fiddler Bonk Gelinas
Tootoo Nichol Ortmeyer

Smithson
Hordichuk

Jeffler 07-26-2007 01:12 PM

Hey everyone, cool signing.

If you want to have it get some exposure, digg this article!

Jed stated (appropriate for a Nashville team eh?) one of the reasons in coming to Nashville was being able to move up from the 4th line. Obviously his play will dictate that but I fully believe he'll be given the chance to make it work on the third line.

(well until Trotz restarts the Fiddler man-crush)

crossxcheck 07-26-2007 01:21 PM

According the TSN he will make $1.25m. Not a bad deal for a solid vet. It also still leaves us room to make another signing.

Fiddler isn't a bad player for the third line. We just felt frustrated that he was getting first line time when injuries hit while Hartnell wasn't.

And just because Orts was promised a chance doesn't mean he was promised a spot.

Was this before Bonk and Gelinas were signed? Things can change.

Agreed and I'm not saying he's a lock. I do think he'll be given the proper look. This is the team that had Fiddler playing with Forsberg afterall :D

Enoch 07-26-2007 01:33 PM

A great signing for the third line. I still think we have a move to make, whether it is a trade or something else. The 8 defensemen is glaring.

we have too many forwards, as well. which of Smithson, Tootoo, Hordichuk is going to take the final fourth line spot?

dbhislife 07-26-2007 01:58 PM

well a florida fan checking in....and I am sorry

I agree hes a good solid vet and knows how to put up pts. but he takes bad penalties. I think the claim that he is penalty prone is overrated....b/c if you look at my team from last year he was like 8th in penalty minutes.....but he takes his at the worse possible times. Just being honest.

Wait, didn't you say he'd be a great signing for you guys if he played on the 4th line?

zingbergeur 07-26-2007 03:38 PM

I know it was a few ears ago, but he was very noticeable in the Flames cup run. He scored quite a few game winning, 3rd period, and OT goals. I loved watching him tear up the Wings that year! He is definitely a playoff performer, which is exactly what we need. Hopefully he can still bring it.

Lola 07-26-2007 05:10 PM

Another Panther fan here-

I think Gelinas is a great player. He brings everything he has to the ice game-in-and-game-out. He's very high energy, and isn't afraid to battle. Not to mention, he's a really nice guy off the ice as well. I'm going to miss him on our team.

Congrats on the signing, and I hope he plays well for you guys. :)

handtrick 07-26-2007 09:41 PM

"I spoke with Barry and he was pretty excited about the young players on the team and the direction of the team so I was sold," Gelinas told The Canadian Press.

"My kids are really excited about going to Nashville."

Gelinas said he wasn't concerned by the Predators' potential sale and rumours that the team could move to Hamilton or Kansas City.

"We signed for one year," said Gelinas. "I'm concentrating on hockey. We'll see happens."

I gotta admit....Poile has done a magnificient job assembling this team given the budgetary constraints and all the uncertainty.

this team appears to be much better built for the playoffs if injuries aren't a critical issue, and we do well enough in the regular season to make the playoffs, of course.

Enoch 07-26-2007 09:51 PM

I do have to agree that I like the look of this team. It just feels right. Our third line might actually be able to shut other teams first line down for a change...........a prospect that has me quite excited.

braindead 07-26-2007 09:59 PM

I will echo the last two posts-- whoever buys the Preds should focus on signing Poile to a long term deal. He has done a fantastic job.

As to Gelinas, he was at the top of my list when he went to the Panthers. He is aging but this is a very decent pickup IMO. I like how this team is shaping up.

1. It was stated in the media that Jed was lured here with talk of moving from the Rangers 4th line to our 3rd line. It will be interesting to see how that shakes out.

2. No doubt our 3rd line is looking better than last year's already

3. if our 4th line will do their job without leaving us shorthanded all season, we may just do some real damage. I was worried for a while, other teams were loading up and we were dumping. Now, Im genuinely excited and ready to take anyone on.

What I like is that this year the line should have a focus. Last year we tried the 3 scoring line technique, but with Fiddler/Nichol/Whoever centering Radulov and Hartnell. It wasn't really offensive due to the center and certainly not defensive. We tried to fix that with the Forsberg trade but soon after we got all the injuries and it never came to fruition and we went back to the Fiddlers and Nichols.

Hopefully with Bonk, Gelinas, Ortmeyer, Fiddler, whoever, we should have a decent defensive line.

Now if we can only cure the PIM line (Hordichuk, Tootoo, Nichol, Smithson).

golfmade 07-27-2007 08:58 PM

Great, cheap signing. He brings experience and is a good fit for the third line. I like it! :yo:
