Ducks News Conference Call

Friend of mine just let me know Burke has a 515 Pacific time conference call.

It Is not about Penner according to his text message to me.

Jerky Leclerc 07-27-2007 04:25 PM

Can we get any confirmation?

Mooseduck 07-27-2007 04:28 PM

Thanks for the update.

Maybe Scott and Teemu are leaving or staying ...
Hopefully, Burke shows pictures from the Fan Cruise. :)

A topless Brian Burke lounging around the pool with a mojito is not what I call entertainment.

If there happen to be any children in his path, I'd call it a tragedy.

Well some people do find whale watching fascinating. :amazed:

Belanger25 07-27-2007 04:34 PM

He sent me the Phone Number to call and the Password too. I imagine it will get out soon.

Even if it's not about Penner, Burke may give some hints on whats going to occur with the offer sheet. Or at the least, he will probably vemnt a little. Apparently Edmonton papers are reporting that Burke and KLowe are very close friends, talking almost on a dialy basis. That may change.

My guess is that they announce that Selanne has signed.

devilsrock 07-27-2007 04:59 PM

oh man this should be good, I wish i could see burk burst when questioned about lowe and pennet because you know their going to ask.

Kukla 07-27-2007 05:00 PM

I can verify the presser.

abax44 07-27-2007 05:05 PM

In this situation, has Penner actually signed Edm's offer, or is it just that at this point, an offer?

For word to leak of it happening, he had to sign it. That contract is his new contract no matter who gets it, now it's just a matter of what team gets the rights to the contract. That ball is in the 'Dux' court.

yes he signed with oilers

abax44 07-27-2007 05:09 PM

So is this the same situation exactly as Kessler last season?

I guess you can't blame the guy for signing the deal, it's a lot of cash, probably more then the Ducks were looking to offer him, but it says a lot about players loyalty to their teams no a days. Even harder to swallow if Selanne does resign at a bargain price.

The thing about RFAs you have to remember is they're not multi-multi-millionaires like their UFA/older teammates are.

They're coming from situations where really a few years earlier they probably were living out of pocket or with assistance from their parents.

You have to put yourself in their position, if you're a guy who grew up middle class, was making a nice $900k for one year, you probably wouldn't blow it all immediately, I would guess. You'd also probably be bowled over by a $20-$50 million dollar offer that would set you up for life.

I am looking at it from his position, hence the, "you can't blame the guy".

This conference call will be about Niedermayer. He will officially announce his retirement.

A guess or do you know this for certain? If this is for certain, odd, as his agent said he'd wait a little while. Maybe, though, he was pressured by the Penner signing.

Also, that means big Pens will indeed be back, although it won't be official for quite some time, I imagine. After going after his RFA, there's no way Burke is going to do KLowe a favor and make it known right away. If he waits, Lowe's money is tied up for quite some time.

Sounds like speculation to me, since I see no source.

Wouldn't Niedermayer do this announcement himself? Do GMs customarily announce the retirement of their key players?

As far as I know. Burke might be saying which way Selanne or Niedermayer are leading, or possibly saying one of them might stay on the team, but usually, from what I've seen, players usually announce their own retirement.

I think you're right. Who knows maybe Niedermayer is announcing he'll be back. Is it an automatic that the Penner signing is going to be directly related to Neidermayer's decision?

I know it's a blog, but Paul Kukla writes for nhl.com and is very credible.
