Habs have highest number of sweater numbers over 40

MONTREAL (CP) - At Jose Theodore's first training camp with the Montreal Canadiens in 1994, he was handed jersey No. 60, hardly a traditional NHL goaltender's number.

Now, what once would have been considered a gaudy number has become part of the image of the 2002 Hart and Vezina Trophy winner, who has no intention of giving it up. "At my first training camp, all the numbers goalies usually wear were taken," Theodore said Wednesday. "No. 1 was retired, Patrick Roy had 33, Donald Brashear had 31.

"They gave me No. 60. I had some good games in it so I decided to keep it."

It fits right in on the Canadiens, who lead the NHL with 10 regulars who wear numbers over 40, including centre Mike Ribeiro's No. 71, centre Yanic Perreault's No. 94 and defenceman Craig Rivet's No. 52.

I'm not so sure Theo had 60 as his first number. Didn't he have another one?

Can't say that I really like all the high numbers but what can you do with so many retired ones and some in consideration.

We're also tops in the league for the number of players wearing visors... we're the biggest rebels in the league I tell ya, always bucking the trend ;)

That can easily be explained.. There’s less of a distance from the ice to most of our players faces. :D

I thought Theo wore #39 in some early games for the Habs. Correct me if I wrong but I pretty sure I'm right.

You're right, it was 37:

He wore it in 95/96 and then was given 60 for the next season. He only played one game wearing but I don't recall how long he was with the Habs that season.

PS Things must be going well for the team when I'm posting in a thread about jersey numbers. Sucks having nothing to b*tch about :joker:

Strange article.

Theodore wore #37 during his first camp and his first NHL game with the Montreal Canadiens.

It wasn't until his 2nd camp that he was given #60, and even still, it wasn't assigned, he took #60 after a discussion about the originality of the number with the teams trainer. Bizarre that he would state otherwise in this article. He himself told me the above version, so it's strange to see him state something different in this article.

Also, Brashear wasn't wearing #31, he was wearing #35.
