TSN's Power Rankings

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/feature/?fid=548&hubname=

We are ranked an impressive 5th.

whatthef 10-15-2007 02:35 PM

I don't think we were ever ranked that high last season. In fact, we probably were never even in the top 10 (maybe even 15).

rayearth 10-15-2007 02:38 PM

Better than ESPN's 22nd. :shakehead Jackasses. Hopefully they'll remedy that today on the update.

Also...'Key Injuries: None.' ? Guess Upshall doesn't count.

After the first week of the season, we probably weren't ranked above 25 and didn't deserve to be.

Whoever put those rankings up is just looking at the standings. We have not played very well in 3 of 4 games.

rayearth 10-15-2007 03:02 PM

Somewhere between 22 and 5 should be good.

MojoJojo 10-15-2007 03:06 PM

TSN's ranking is not subjective. It is based on a formula that takes into account the standings, # of goals for and against, and results of the most recent (usually last ten) games. #5 doesnt mean TSN thinks we are the 5th best team in the NHL, just that their computer likes our numbers.

They have a specific, statistical formula that they use. It's so early in the season that the power rankings are all over the place and I'm sure they'll change soon enough.

I really don't agree. We certainly aren't the 5th best team in the league, but we've played pretty well through 4 games. Not amazing, but we've earned our record IMO

He is not a key player. Not yet. Flyers top 5 in the league? Thats too high. Top 15.

Don't think they're looking at just standings, Buffalo is 2-2 and sits at #4...

The Wild has given up 4 goals in 5 games...we gave up 5 to edmonton, TSN is stupid, too much East coast love...gotta take power rankings with a grain of salt this early, the smoke hasn't even began to clear.

If it's statistical, I'm sure the fact that we are at 17 GF, 10 GA puts us at 5, our VAN win skews the hell out of us.

I think we've earned it too.

Sure, there's been times in the last 4 games where we didn't look all that good, but we kept it together and ended up winning 3 of them. Last year we would have let those games slip away. Personally I don't think we're ranked 5th, but we're not far away from that.

Scary thing is, I think as the season goes on, we are only going to look better and better as these new group of guys become more use to each other.

TrojanDan46 10-15-2007 07:08 PM

#5 is pretty high, a little undeserved to me...I'd say we are between 8-12.

Yes he is. He's probably our 2nd best winger.

i like Upshall, but Gagne, Knuble, Hartnell, and even Lupul have all shown more in this league than him. he certainly plays hard and has the ability to get some stuff done... that being said, i would consider him a key injury given that he'll be playing 15+ a night somewhere in there.

Number 5 on the CBS poll:

CBS Sportsline: http://www.sportsline.com/nhl/story/10410242

It's tempting to call them the latter-day Broad Street Bullies because of head cases like Steve Downie and Jesse Boulerice, but that misses the point about a talented team that is jelling quickly.

orange and black48 10-15-2007 10:36 PM

Yeah 5 is definetly high. Ill go with like 14th

6 on Fox.
http://msn.foxsports.com/nhl/powerRankings

ESPN's should be up today. Will probably have us at 28.

iceman42 10-17-2007 10:12 AM

ESPN's preseason rankings for the projected finish had us #4 out of the #5 in our division, with Devils and Pens in front of us. I being a homer I would have said #2 solid with a possible #1, but I would think that with the offseason moves taken into consideration a solid #3 from an "unbiased" magazine would have been much more realistic expectation, with the Debbies and NYI being #4 and #5.

EasyMac 10-17-2007 12:38 PM

The Flyers are also on the stat of the day on tsn.ca

Stat of the Day

On Tuesday, the Flyers beat the Thrashers 4-0. The win was the Flyers fourth of the season. They didn't win their fourth game last season until November 15.

rayearth 10-17-2007 01:47 PM

ESPN bumped us up to 14. **** them.

Buccigross must be in charge of that. he picked the Flyers to finish last in the Atlantic afterall.

rayearth 10-17-2007 02:04 PM

Here are my rankings which are based on the RPI formula below. I started fooling around with this a couple years ago with the NFL and D2 football (go WCU!).

Team's winning percentage (25%), its opponents' winning percentage (50%), and the winning percentage of those opponents' opponents (25%). A home win counts as 0.6 win, while a road win counts as 1.4 wins.

As of 10/17/2007
RPI rank RPI% Team
1 0.585 Minnesota
2 0.575 Carolina
3 0.569 St. Louis
4 0.55 Ottawa
5 0.547 Chicago
6 0.545 San Jose
7 0.541 Washington
8 0.538 Philadelphia
9 0.533 Columbus
9 0.533 Colorado
11 0.53 NY Rangers
12 0.52 New Jersey
12 0.52 Phoenix
14 0.514 NY Islanders
15 0.511 Boston
16 0.51 Tampa Bay
17 0.5 Florida
18 0.496 Montreal
19 0.476 Edmonton
20 0.471 Detroit
21 0.47 Toronto
22 0.469 Vancouver
22 0.469 Calgary
24 0.467 Pittsburgh
25 0.441 Buffalo
26 0.436 Anaheim
27 0.419 Nashville
28 0.406 Dallas
29 0.401 Los Angeles
30 0.397 Atlanta

While the Flyers are 4-1, their opponents are 10-20 and that hurts. Opponents' opponents are 95-74.
