If you were to Rebuild

Just for Fun....(even though I have been calling for a re-building period since last season)

If you were to Rebuild the flyers next year....who would you keep as you building blocks for the future and who would you trade away for draft picks and/or young talent?

stanley 01-14-2004 05:17 AM

If I were to hypothetically rebuild the Flyers, I would focus on finances. Keep the cheap players, and do what you can to rid yourself of long-term deals. I would try to get as many draft picks or young players in return as possible. I would target specific young players of interest on contenders, but would make moving expensive veterans a priority over the latter. They wouldn't get full value on the dollar, and would have to accept what they could get off contending teams (those likely to have a use for Flyer veterans). If you think there's complaining over a second-round instead of a third-round pick for Chiounard, you haven't seen anything yet. Beggars can't be choosers. I wouldn't move Johnsson, Gagne, Williams, Esche, Handzus, Comrie, and a few other young and cheap guys. Pretty boilerplate, I think.

Overall, I don't see why a team with the financial resources of the Flyers would ever need to completely rebuild in such a fashion. Rebuilding sounds great, but it's a sad consolation prize in my opinion. Fans in general are never happy, and Flyer fans in particular ALWAYS think they have it all figured out. It's funny how many of us don't actually hold jobs in the industry.

What the entire team needs right now is a week off and away from hockey.

Keep:
Pitkanen
Williams
Comrie
Gagne
Primeau (at a lower salary)
Recchi
Lapointe
Somik
Seidenberg
Vandermeer
Johnsson
Esche
I'm 50/50 on keeping JR... his performance lately has tailed off, but he started the season well and is still leading our team in scoring. :dunno:

donelikedinner 01-14-2004 06:21 AM

Amonte - retire
Brashear - trade
Desjardins - keep, veteran D for the kids
Fedoruk - keep since Brash is gone
Gagne - trade, he's soft and needs a scenery change
Handzus - keep
Johnsson - keep
Kapanen - keep
LeClair - retire
Ragnarsson - trade
Recchi - keep, his experience for the kids
Roenick - keep, see above
Therien - give away
Weinrich - trade
Williams - keep
Comrie - keep
Sharp - keep
Pitkanen - keep
Seidenberg - keep
Somik - keep
Kane - keep
Vandermeer - trade
Esche - keep
Hackett - give away

I'm all for that. After his first 2-3 starts, he's been horrible!

When will Clarke put a real VALUE on goaltending?
I swear he puts forth just enough effort, to say he gave us the best chance to compete, but in the end it's not enough. I half believe that he wants to be the only cup winning captain in our history. They would have never won the cups , if not for Bernie.
Would the Debs have won cups without Marty? NOPE!
Would the 90's Canadiens & Av's won cups without Roy? NOPE!

The only team to win with so-so tenders, is Detroit, and those gaolies made key saves, and the critical time in the game, unlike the FLYERS recent past.
Last nite was a prime example. We go up 1-0, seconds later... tied.
We go up 2-1... minute later... tied!
It's getting REAL OLD!

Recchi (see above)
Johnsson
Fedoruk
Williams
Comrie

Seidenberg
Vandermeer
Esche (as a back up)

OUT OF HERE
Handzus (Maybe)

I would change a couple things here personally. Keep Primeau at a lower salary if possible for his leadership. Keep Gagne unless the deal was too good to walk away from, like a top notch goaltender. He's good defensively and he CAN score. Lapointe seems like he would be a good depth guy during the transition, he doesn't take too many games off (depression aside). Roenick would REALLY have to be explosive offensively to want him back. I like him in general, but if we're rebuilding, I want someone else to get more ice time.

Dr Love 01-15-2004 09:11 AM

Keep: Esche, Pitkanen, Johnsson, Williams, Comrie, Sharp, Vandermeer, Seidenberg, Recchi, Desjardins, Kapanen

Offer up for trade: Gagne, Handzus

Gone: Everyone else.

Alright, as much as I think all this rebuilding talk is just reactionary panic, I'll bite. Re-tooling is a much better name for all this.

KEEP
Desjardins (Leadership, and he's pretty good when he plays a limited amount)
Recchi (Leadership, and he's still got the goods)
Johnsson (Eric who?)
Fedoruk (He has style)
Williams (Hardest worker on the team, and he's got the goods)
Comrie (Extremely talented, and young)
Sharp (Love his work ethic)
Pitkanen (Great shot, Great vision, and only 20)
Seidenberg (He likes to shoot :) )
Gagne (Exelent two way player, would be a shame to give up on him now)
Primeau (Leadership)
Roenick (J.R.= clutch)
Kapanen (Hustle)
Lapointe (Work ethic, and they'll still need somebody to play on the fourth line)
Esche (I like Robert, don't get rid of him, lose Hackett)

OUT OF HERE
Handzus (Trade bait)
Amonte (Always liked him, but I don't know)
Brashear (He'd be a keeper if he would stop trying to play Gordie Howe)
LeClair (So much money, so little production)
Ragnarsson (I like him, but he's ageing)
Therien (Go away)
Vandermeer (I like him, but he's trade bait)
Weinrich (He's starting to lose it)
Somik (Borderline, he works his butt off, but seems injury prone)
Hackett (Duh)

GKJ 01-16-2004 05:11 AM

Weinrich's contract is up this season, so he is gone to begin with anyways most likely with Seidenberg and Vandermeer knocking on the door.

With that said, I still say Chris Therien is back.

Must keep Comrie and Handzus, must keep all the kids, plus Kapanen, Amonte, Roenick, Johnsson, Esche and Desjardins. Mark Recchi would probably come back as well. Gone is everyone else. Primeau (via free agency), Hackett(via buyout), LeClair (via buyout).

I think we need another high-profile prospect defenseman, unless someone emerges during the rest of this season. Losing Woywitka is a big hit to the future corps.

Without Therien and Weinrich, the top 6 d-men are:

Johnsson
Pitkanen
Desjardins
Vandermeer
Seidenberg
Ragnarsson

Unless we pick up someone else in a trade. (Which I think is very possible)

I agree, and I read your previous post as well.
I think that Handzus will be dealt for a young D and they will bring Prims back. Alot of talk on these boards with Handzus in a package for a goalie, but I would only do that for a young goalie that provides a significant upgrade (which is not likely as that means guys like Turco, Theo, Luongo although I would do it for a very close goalie with high potential like a Miller also.)

Flyers dom NHL 01-19-2004 05:37 PM

If i were rebuilding the lineup next year would look like this...

Gagne, Comrie, Williams
Kapanen, Carter, Recchi
Ruzicka or Dozdetsky, Richards, Somik
Fedoruk, Sharp, Kane

Pitkanen
Seidenberg
Vandermeer
Johnsson
Ragnarsson
Jones or Picard or Ruggeri

Esche
Nittymaki or Malek

FlyHigh 01-19-2004 05:49 PM

It's all in good fun. I'm afraid we're stuck with most of the dead weight (ie LeClair)
