Broken ankle

Question for all of you...
My 13 year old son plays AAA hockey at the Bantam Major level. Last night at practice, during a weird drill, he fell backwards on his skate and broke his ankle at the growth plate. Shouldn't the boot of the skate prevented that from happening? I have never scrimped on skates, in fact, he skates in the CCM Vectors 10.0. The Ovechkins. After the shock has worn off, I am just wondering how this could have happened. He is two months minimum off the ice, which just so sucks. And, of course we still have to pay our fees, which amount to over $5000.00. Just curious if any of you have ever seen this happen.

Haven't seen a break, but a sprain yes.I think this falls under the "**** happens" heading.Must be just the way he fell.I feel your pain as my son had an accident in Bantam minor which screwed up his season.Hang in there and this too shall pass.Too date, i have seen kids rebound from broken femurs, wrists, collarbones, shoulders and even a lacerated liver!

That totally falls under s**t happens.

My brother (while wearing the pro tacks) broke his ankle one shift and his d-partner, while wearing NHBone90's broke his ankle.

It's usually due to the fall, not the skate.

The exact same thing happened to me when I was 15, I broke my ankle at the growth plate during a game, I fell akwardly. A skate can't prevent that kind of injury, I also thought that it should have in the beginning but they told me it couldn't have.
