Shadowing or Shut Down

I want to hear the different experiences whether they be pro or minor hockey when it comes to shutting down and opponent.

Imagine this player is not a player that is going to go end to end but is a strong center. Strong on the puck; good vision and a rifle shot. His game is best from the blueline in.

What would you do with this player? Do you use a D pair? Do you use a shutdown center?

What would you do?

Shadow him for sure if it's one star player that makes players around him better. Get a good skating player to tail him the whole game.

If you tail a player all over the ice how do you sort your D-zone coverage? Do you ask your D to play the other two linemates exclusively in the D zone? If they begin to stretch the center in the NZ to a wing do you ask a D man to fill a middle gap and pick up a trailer into the zone?
