LW Magnus Pääjärvi-Svensson (2009, 10th overall, Edmonton)

For those that are interested in younger prospects, there is this Swedish kid Magnus Pääjärvi (http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=6014), who appears to be the best Swedish prospect we have seen in a long, long while.

Pääjärvi is born 1991, 14-years old and thus eligible for the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. He is 6'0 and growing and has already, despite his young age, received plenty of attention in Sweden.

In the yearly prospect tournament TV-pucken (a tournament for the best 16-year olds, all districts in Sweden have a team and the final games are broadcasted) this Pääjärvi kid was among the best players there, playing against players that were two years older. He scored 8 goals and 3 assists in 8 games and was the fourth best scorer in the tournament.

His fine performance has granted him the chance not to make the U16 national team (players born 1990), but also the U17 team (players born 1989). Considering he outscored most players that will be at the U17 camp, he has a great shot at making the cut. If he makes it, it will be quite unique and I am not sure if I have ever seen a Swedish 14-year old play on the Swedish U17 team. I do not think so.

Anyway, a short scouting profile.
- Good size (for a 14-year old, anyway)
- Fast skater
- Fine technical skills, has plenty of nice dekes and moves that he uses
- Excellent hockey sense
- Excellent scoring tough
- The instinct of a winner

on the downside, he is like many really young prospects very mediocre in his own end and does not backcheck enough.

Well, I figure you guys will be hearing a lot about this kid in the next few years so I thought I'd be the first one to give you a short introduction.

Note: Those of you familiar with the Swedish WHLer Björn Svensson (plays for Moose Jaw), Pääjärvi is actually Svensson's younger brother.

Also, his father is a quite famous player agent. I'm sure that won't hurt his case. ;)

kruezer 10-24-2005 04:15 PM

Hmmm, Tavares' first competitor?

Choice 10-24-2005 04:19 PM

This kid is 14! Prob. not even a freshman in high school. I refuse to pay attention until '08

2009 could prove to be a good draft with Tavares and this guy.

Tavares isn't eligible until 2009. He turns 18 on September 20, 2008, which misses the 2008 draft cut-off by five days. There was talk during the CBA negotiations that the draft eligibility period would move from September 16-September 15 to January 1-December 31 (a much more logical system) but I didn't hear of that being finalized.

He's got nothing on Dustin Rose

Time to make some Crosby vs Pääjärvi topics

Don't know about his skills, but he sure has an interesting name. I can just see a header on NHL.com- "Gary Thorne out for season with twisted tongue".

Is that so difficult to say? Isn't it simply pronounced Pa-Jar-Vy?

yes i heard it too, but i think the problem was with insurances, 'cause some kids could play at 17 years old with adults. That's why the draft eligibility correspond to the training camps beginning date.

Magnus Pääjärvi > Karl XVI Gustaf.

Typical, you can't raise your own prospects, but have to resort to Finnish blood.

Or is he just your equivalent of Dustin Rose?

I was just poking fun at all the dots above his name, and the fact that Thorne is just horrible when it comes to pronouncing names.

HF2002 10-24-2005 05:31 PM

If nothing else, being successful against players two years older at age 14 is still impressive. The physical and strength difference can be quite dramatic at this age.

Never the less, leave this kid, Tavares, and other similar kids ALONE!

Canucks-R-best 10-24-2005 05:34 PM

Dustin Rose eats swedish people

Yeah, because Mihael Jackson's already drafted them.

Magnus Pääjärvi > M.A. Numminen, Nokia & Karelian Piirakka.

Btw Pred, I thought he got picked for the U18 team?

Dad = Svensson
Mother = Pääjärvi

Divorce = Mother insists on Magnus being named Pääjärvi.

(I did ask his agent/dad about this out of curiousity)
