Hunt For a Top 4 Defenseman Begins Here!!

Regardless of Kronwall's status, I believe the Wings true need is another top 4 D-man (magnified if Kronner is back to the IR). Even Chelios who stands to lose playing time believes another D-man is needed.

Some of the Possible candidates:

Rob Blake, LAK, 6'3" - 222lbs
- 4G, 21Asst, 80 PIM and -13
- pending UFA
- earning $6M this season

Brad Stuart, LAK, 6'2" - 213lbs
- 4g, 9Asst, 59 PIM and -12
- pending UFA
- earning $3.5M this season

Jaroslav Modry, LAK, 6'2" - 220lbs
- 1G, 5Asst, 34 PIM and -4
- pending UFA
- earning $1.2M this season

Michal Rozsival, NYR, 6'2"-210lbs
- 12G, 17Asst, 52 PIM and -3
- pending UFA
- earning $2.1M this season

Paul Mara, NYR, 6'4"-219lbs
- 1G, 12Asst, 40 PIM and +1
- pending UFA
- earning $3M this season

Marek Malik, NYR, 6'6"- 240lbs
- 0G, 3Asst, 32 PIM and +1 (26 games)
- pending UFA
- earning $2.5M this season

Dmitri Kalinin, BUF, 6'3" -212lbs
- 0G, 4Asst, 18 PIM and E (26 games)
- pending UFA
- earning $2M this season

Brian Campbell, BUF, 6' - 190lbs
- 4G, 29asst, 6 PIM and +1
- pending UFA
- earning $1.5M this season

Barrett Jackman, STL, 6' - 213lbs
- 1G, 4Asst, 50 PIM and -15
- pending UFA
- earning $2.2M this season

Dan Boyle, TBL, 5'11" - 190lbs
- 2G, 2Asst, 0 PIM and -9 (6 games)
- pening UFA
- earning $3.625M this season
** Just returned from IR

Adam Foote, CBJ, 6'2" - 224lbs
- 1G, 12Asst, 69 PIM and +6
- pending UFA
- earning $4.6M this season

Pavel Kubina, TML, 6'4" - 244lbs
- 4G, 20Asst, 50 PIM and +3
- 2 more seasons @ 5M/year
- earning $5M this season

Brian Pothier, WAS, 6' - 198lbs
- 5G, 9Asst, 20 PIM and +5 (38 games)
- 2 more season @ $2.5M/year
- earning $2.5M this season
** IR with a concussion

Alexei Zhitnik, ATL, 5'11" - 215lbs
- 1G, 4Asst, 38 PIM and -13
- 1 more season @ 3.5M
- earning 3.5M this season

Joni Pitkanen, EDM, 6'3" - 210lbs
- 6G, 8Asst, 36 PIM and -1
- pending RFA
- earning $2.4M this season
** Rumoured Oil might not want to weigh into RFA waters with him

Who is everyone interested in? I know people seem to have a strong opinion about Blake one way or the other...
Feel free to throw some more names out there. I'll be sure to throw my opinion in soon enough.

Blake, Stuart or Kalinin.

Personally, I think Blake and Stuart bring an intangible to the Wings, they both hate Anaheim, Blake more than Stuart. Will that make a huge difference? No clue, but it's something I think will bring an added aspect if we get one of them.

I wouldn't worry too much about height and weight. Detroit needs a skilled, PP defenseman more than anything.

Don't they already have 2 of the best?

no we dont :help:

bullocks 01-30-2008 11:09 PM

I'll take Blake, Stuart, Foote or Rozsival

Any of those four would make me happy. Preferably Blake or Foote.

Malik is defenitly on the block, Sather is trying to deal him.

He won't be coming to Detroit :)

I wouldn't touch Roszival with a 10-foot, splinter-laden, wooden spoon. Every time I watch the Rangers play, he's making some pretty bone-headed plays...

... the funny thing is, earlier in the season Malik was saving Rosy's bacon more often than not...

Filppula 01-31-2008 02:14 AM

Adam Foote for me thanks. But whatever happens, I want someone who'll stick around, not cost us great picks/prospects then leave immediately once the season is done.

Boomhower 01-31-2008 03:04 AM

I would like to see Holland aquire Paul Mara, I know he's a boarderline top 4, but I've always been a big fan of Mara. He is a very good skater and can handle the puck, he does not have stone hands for a big guy.

I've always believed Mara has all the tools, but consistency hasn't been there throughout his career. He has also never really been apart of a consistantly good hockey team. I think Detroit would bring out the best in him and he would fit into the Wings system.

Mara wouldn't deplete Detroit's prospects like some of the bigger names and has a history playing some junior hockey in Michigan, so if things go well it's likely he could be brought back next season for good value (he's only 28).

What are the chances that Washington will sell Green?

Zero.

cmccallum 01-31-2008 09:18 AM

Foote would be a great addition but, that salary i wouldn't do it especially as a rental. With that money i say go with Brian Campbell if they indeed are making a move for a d-man. Bring a little diversity to the defense and i believe Brian can play the Wings system well.

Spitfire11 01-31-2008 09:43 AM

I'd pay the hefty price and try to get the Blues to trade us Jackman. Try Foote next, but he's going to cost a lot as well. Stuart and Mara would be decent options. Most of those guys wouldn't be able to take Lilja's spot as the #4 though.

Syndrome 01-31-2008 10:24 AM

Blake has been more Blake-like the last month or so, but he'd clearly be a rental, and I'd be loathe to give up much for him. Jackman would be my second choice.

Do you know that last 2 seasons combined Lidstrom is +61?

But what do you guess Malik is?

He is +60.

Some of those Dmen you folks mention cost more than what the Wings would like to pay and some of them will cost more what the Wings can afford. Sorry but some of the names here are just a pipe dream.

And this is why I think Malik would be a good fit.

The Winged Wheel 01-31-2008 12:28 PM

Lidstrom is an astounding +381 in his career. :yo:

I think we're going to be outcasts here, but I'd love to see Jackman in Detroit. The reason is simple: I hate that *******. He's mean, plays with an edge, clears the crease, and will pop you in the chops because he feels like it...

Foote would be awesome too, for many of the same reasons.

Unfortunately, both are in our division.

Problem is, I believe Campbell would also only be a rental. He's looking for Vanek-like money, no way he's worth that much money. I'd love for the wings to get him, but I can't see paying him more than Lidstrom, if he signs.

Brian Campbell will thrive under the Red Wings system. He's smart and a very heads up type hockey player. That being said the only problem is that he may cost too much unless nobody is willing to pay what buffalo wants for him then maybe we can get him. Anyways he wont be in Buffalo after the season

If Campbell isn't signed in the next 2 weeks, he's gone. No way Buffalo can afford to let another player walk at the end of the year without anything to show for it.
