Mason/Lidstrom recalled

and Duvie sent back to Syracuse

(Sorry..header should read Lindstrom - don't know how to edit it)

I want Mason to get a start. With back to back games and how bad Freddy No Good has been playing I think he will.

Brassard Calder 02-06-2008 10:24 AM

Glad to see Joakim back up.

dru 02-06-2008 10:29 AM

Some Mason tidbits:
  • Columbus' second pick, 69th overall, in the 2006 Entry Draft.
  • Most Valuable Player and Top Goaltender at the 2008 World Junior Championships. (Gold medal winner)
  • OHL's Goaltender of the Year in 2006-07 after going 45-13-4 with a 3.20 goals-against average, .914 save percentage.
  • In 105 career OHL games, he is 72-22-7 with a 3.03 goals-against average, .916 save percentage and five shutouts.

JacketsFanWest 02-06-2008 10:43 AM

How are the Jackets able to emergency recall Mason when LaCosta is able to play? This is ridiculous to call a kid up from juniors when there are other goaltenders in the system able to play. The Kitchener folks must be so pissed off.

I was wondering the same thing. Could it have something to do with nobody left to replace Lacosta and Mason too young for AHL? Not saying that is the logic just all I can figure.

Thats what I was thinking. Im not sure of the crunch's goalie situation though.

I think that's exactly it.

CoachWithNoTeam 02-06-2008 12:08 PM

So who sits for Joakim? This seems odd to me.

Last nights TOI:
Brassard - 6:10
Brule - 7:08
Fritsche - 8:10
Murray - 10:27
Boll - 10:06

Brassard back down? Another trade on the way?

That's a HUGE understatement. There is no reason whatsoever for the Jackets to not have signed an AHL goalie to a contract once it was clear that there would be a shortage of tenders in the system.

dru 02-06-2008 12:45 PM

About Kitchener....NHL trumps OHL every day of the week unless they want to start paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to 19 year olds.

Besides, he'll probably be up for 2 to 3 games max. I think the Rangers can deal considering they primarly got him for the Memorial Cup.

I didn't hear any London fans freaking out when he won the gold medal playing in the Worlds.

MFRONE 02-06-2008 12:46 PM

Lindstrom is up because we need another extra body on the road trip just incase of an injury

As excited as I am at the possibility of Mason seeing some action in a CBJ uni, and while my position has nothing to do with Kitchener whatsoever, I couldn't agree more. We were just here a month ago!

Spot on, DRU!!! Mason's only here for, what, a week..then headed back in time to wrap up the championship for Kitchner...RIGHT NOW, he's needed to be in the Jackets uniform helping the team that drafted him keep trying to push for a play-off spot (I know, I know - - the rungs on that playoff ladder are starting to break). Who knows, maybe Mason plays, gets a shut out and scores a hat trick :naughty:

Dudette. ;)

CHL teams are well aware of the potential of losing the services of their best players to the World Juniors. It goes with the territory. Having players called up to the NHL in mid-season is not. It rarely happens, and it's piss poor asset management by the NHL team in question when it does.

I've said my piece. It sucks that Leclaire is injured - he's a terrific goalie. And it sucks that there is apparently no other option than calling a kid up from juniors.

And thanks for the welcome. Really. I mean it.

My apologies. :innocent:

I will agree that it sucks for Kitchener but it could boost his confidence that much more. But don't worry, outside of being ran into by a Capitals player, he should be back there in a few games.

Just curious, are you a Kitchener Rangers fan? Do you have a boyfriend?

Dr. Fire 02-06-2008 01:08 PM

It had nothing to do with bad asset management, and everything to do with a slew of injuries to the goaltenders down on the farm. Those injuries only impact Columbus when one of our goalies goes down. Those minor league teams did deal with the injuries by signing goalies to minor league contracts

eg: Syracuse signing Goering (sp).

FiveHole23 02-06-2008 01:11 PM

Hey our piss poor management caused..

A Bus Crash.
A career ending knee injury.
A sprained neck.
A slew of overreacting HF posters.

Goes without saying, doesn't it?

Also, we're at or near the max for contracts so we can't sign another NHL eligible goalie without getting rid of someone and we can't do that until the offseason (i.e. buyout Duvie).

JacketsFanWest 02-06-2008 01:31 PM

Can anyone explain why Lacosta wasn't called up, other than Hitch wants Mason?

There's no reason Lacosta can't ride the pine in Columbus if he's is healthy enough to play in the ECHL and AHL.

Careful, it hasn't been confirmed that Popperle's injury is career-ending.

The reason Mason was called up is easy- he isn't AHL eligible, so if we were to call up Lacosta, (our only other healthy pro goalie), there would be a shortage in Syracuse.

It's emergency recall anyway, so he's only here for a few days.

Lindstrom- kind of a surprising move, but i guess Hitch liked what he saw when he was up here and everybody and their dog knows Joakim has a ton of offensive skill.

Sucks for Crunch fans though, they had to call up Starkov from Youngstown just to ice a minimum squad. I wonder why they didn't call up Pohl instead? He's having the better season.

Buuuut, when you are a fan of an AHL team, this is what you should expect. It's a development/feeder league.

FiveHole23 02-06-2008 01:37 PM

What is Minimum squad in the AHL?

No reason just curious.

JacketsFanWest 02-06-2008 01:38 PM

I never thought having a shortage in Syracuse was anything Columbus ever cared about.

Syracuse has Goehring (who isn't doing very well, but he is healthy) and they can easily sign a PTO ECHL or CHL goalie to back him up if needed. They've done that twice this year with Craig Kowalski and Curtis Darling.

The whole point of juniors isn't to provide a minor league call-up system for pro teams.
