Walz available?

Wondering if he is available? Or if there's been any word on him moving at or around the deadline?

thestonedkoala 02-02-2004 10:01 PM

Not to a Western team and it would have to be overpayment to get him.

What if the Wild are WELL out of a playoff picture around the deadline? Isn't he a UFA at seasons end? I'm sure the Wild would gladly deal him if they got back a 2nd round pick or 3rd round pick.

Western conference team or not. I don't think it will matter around the deadline.

thestonedkoala 02-02-2004 10:09 PM

He will be but the Wild would look like idiots if they didn't resign him immediately, no matter really how much he demands as it is reasonable (I'm not saying 8 million but like a 1-2 million fine!).

That would shock the hell out of me.

It's a tough call really, last season at the deadline someone offered a 1st for him and DR said no. Different situation of course, but I'm sure he'd be available for the right price.

I think everyone is available, Walz too. Not that they are better but , with guys like M. Chounard, Weimer, we have OK d centers, Dowd is not worth much but fits in here at C. Why not entertain deals for Walz. With a future, well 5 years of. Dupuis, Gaborik, Koivu, PM, Burns, Schultz, Wanvig as a main of young guys and Park, Daigle, Mitchel, Kuba, Zyuzin, Chouinard, Antii, as vets, Ahh we could use some upgrades. I think the wild will be after a player, like when we got Mitchel, i think we want a sure thing or something close for Wes, With out him we are not the same team. In our fifth year it would be hard to have wholesaled, Wes and Brunno. Argueably our two most valuable skaters. If that happened next year could be worse than this one.

I don't know...still don't agree with helping any Western team, especially one within our division. In a rental situation, it is plausible, but the momentum factor is something else. If Vancouver went on to win the Stanley Cup Finals on the heels of a Walz for whoever trade at the deadline, well...that would be bad for the psyche. The confidence built from a cup championship would push the Wild that much further behind their division rivals. Walz to the Devils or Senators or something is one thing, but to the Cannucks...no way.

It will definatly take more than a 2nd or 3rd IMO. He's one of the best defensive forwards in the league.

I agree - he's made a pretty good name for himself in Minnesota, Selke finalist, one of the fastest skaters in the league, fierce competitor, shorthanded specialist - he could be enormously valuable to a cup contender. He's got a lot left in the tank as well in spite of his age. The only thing he could use improvement on is faceoffs. Still, a 2nd or 3rd rounder would be a gross underpayment IMO.

Wild Bill 02-03-2004 07:56 PM

You know, after thinking about it for awhile, I could see moving Wes to a team like the Cannucks or the Av's. As much as I'd like to think our guys can compete with them, we simply cannot match up offensively. Someday soon maybe, but now, not a chance. I think the playoffs exposed the Wild for a team that waits for other teams to make mistakes. It seems like when we get our chances, we cannot capitalize, unlike last year. If we can get a good prospect from one of our division rivals to burn them for years, for a UFA, I'm for it...but only if we are completely out of the race.

Wes Walz for R.J. Umberger and a mid-range pick

Now there's a trade I'm sure both teams can be happy with. Umberger's likely going to leave as an UFA at season's end anyways.

Bookman 02-04-2004 09:04 AM

Sorry, I just couldn't see Walz as a Canuck. Or an Av. Let's just keep Wes to serve as a mentor to the kids, along with Dowd and Sergei and Bruno. Trade anybody else you want. :dunno:

thestonedkoala 02-04-2004 11:56 AM

Bruno yes but Dowd and Zholtok should leave.

Hecht 02-04-2004 01:36 PM

don't forget Marshall and Hendrickson!

totally agree with you TSk. Sorry Zholtok fans, but he's washed up IMHO! :D

Hecht 02-04-2004 02:46 PM

I agree either Wallin or one of the Chouinard's (marc more specifically) would be an adiquate fill in.

Bookman 02-04-2004 09:30 PM

Yeah, Sergei's looking pretty washed up with 3 gols in the last 2 games. :D

DW 02-04-2004 09:41 PM

Not really saying much, Jason Marshall has 3-4 pts in the last week.

it's very perplexing..Marshall sucked when he was in houston...now he's like the 2nd coming of Paul Coffey...go figure :dunno:

Call me crazy, but I've been very impressed with Marshall this time around. It seems like the trip to Houston was a much needed kick in the ass for him. Maybe JL should try this trick with Bomber? :dunno:

Let's see him do it for the rest of the season, then you might change my mind on Zholtok. Until then, I still say he's washed up! :yo:

Well, to say he's wahed up implies that he was once something more than he is now. Looking over Sergei's stats, with 23 points in 48 games, he's on a pace to net around 40 points or so, which is well in line with last year's 42, or 39 from 2002.

Good point. I just have never really thought that he has done much for this team. Just my opinion. :dunno:

Lake Harriet 02-05-2004 01:21 PM

One thing hasn't been mentioned: Walz is Jacques favorite player. They can get several more good years out of him. More late first rounders than not fail to have significant NHL careers. Go look at the draft lists from 5-6 years ago.
