Are you implying that the average HF member isn't knowledgeable enough to write such a list?

That's shocking and I find your opinions quite offensive my dear new enemy!!!!

:biglaugh:

:biglaugh:

well ... hum hum ... all I'm saying is that there's not much more worth to this article than there is to Licou's list of top 10 captains of all time.

Shabutie 03-18-2008 03:28 PM

That is a horrible horrible list. Mats, Alfie and Saku have no right to be there, neither does Peca.

Terrible.

So NHL.Com is "some random HF member guy"

Judge Sauer* 03-18-2008 03:31 PM

Looks like since the start of the modern day NHL after expansion....or maybe the top 10 in the past 10 years?

p.s.
On a quick glance it seems like the magazine is Crosby and Wings heavy.

no all I'm saying is that it's not worth anything more than some HF guy's list unless they tell me how they got to that result

Euro trash :shakehead :sarcasm:

What is this? Best of all time? That's a horrible list. I guess they didn't have any good captains before 1984.

DrMailloux 03-18-2008 03:37 PM

Jean beliveau isn't even on that list ! :biglaugh:

Exactly...That's the real number 1 right there.

the list includes only captains who've been in the league since Yzerman was named captain of the Wings 21 years ago and last time I checked Beliveau did not play in the NHL during that time.

What the hell kinda list is that?

**** I'll make a list of the nicest goals of the season starting with Ovechkin's 35th.

Lalander977 03-18-2008 04:24 PM

I guess I need Lasik surgery because I failed to see:

Mike Modano
Ron Francis
Doug Gilmour
Dale Hawerchuk

and...

Kirk Muller
Trevor Linden
Peter Statsny
Jarome Iginla

The last 4 are debatable thought...

Russeltown 03-18-2008 04:43 PM

Where's Tim Taylor? :dunno:

HamrlikTheStud* 03-18-2008 04:59 PM

Where is Gainey? Are they trying to sell me that Koivu is a better captain than Gainey?!

Bermy 03-18-2008 05:05 PM

that's a pretty odd list imo

the number of games they had their captaincy ?

Quiet Robert 03-18-2008 05:30 PM

The top 5 is kind of hard to argue with, but the bottom five is a little odd.

As for Koivu's place on the list, my guess would be that longevity and tenure with the same team are the reasons for his inclusion? A lot of excellent leaders just weren't captains for overly long periods of time. Gilmour was captain of the Leafs for 3 years and Hawks for 1. Iginla has only been captain since 03-04. Joe Nieuwendyk was only captain of the Flames for 4 years. You go down the list and it's not often to have guys be captains for the same team as long as Koivu and Sundin have been in today's hockey.

You have to give credit to both Koivu and Sundin for having been two captains of storied franchises during less than ideal times for so long. And it seems to me that only in their home markets are they criticized, the rest of the league (fans, broadcasters, journalists etc...) seems to view their leadership skills in high regard.

waffledave 03-18-2008 05:34 PM

The reactions here are funny. Every single fan of other teams considers Koivu to be one of the best captains currently in the NHL. Yet for some reason Habs fans think he sucks.

I get the feeling If Yzerman or Sakic were the captain of this team, people would still complain.

waffledave 03-18-2008 05:37 PM

Personally I can't wait until the playoffs.

If this team goes to the conference finals or more, we'll all be happy right?

Of course, the haters will say Koivu had nothing to do with it. We'll have gone far because we have a good team, not because Koivu is a good captain or anything.

Yet the same haters blame Koivu for never taking those bad teams anywhere. Funny how it works.

Koivu never led this team to anything! Koivu is the only constant over all those bad years!

But if this team does go far this year, it certainly won't be because of Koivu! :biglaugh:

ed ible* 03-18-2008 05:42 PM

There has never been a Euro captain take his team to the Stanley cup...........so will this be the year?

Habs 03-18-2008 05:45 PM

Strange list indeed, but only because of some of the legendary captains they neglected.
