Biggest reason for the PK Improvement

The PK has been much better the last few weeks then it was earlier in the year... .I think the biggest reason is Carey Price.

The factors
He plays the puck on dump ins much better than Huet.... This makes it harder for other teams to set up.... He even clears it down the ice like an extra D at times.

He is better on point shots (huets big weakness... and something that gets set up by every PP in the league).

He's physically bigger than Huet.... more deflections will naturally hit him.

His puck tracking has really improved from earlier in the year, credit Rollie Melanson.

i fully agree but you have to also credit the forwards lately, they've been a lot more aggressive, which omits alot of point shots

NHLcrazy 04-01-2008 09:02 PM

Tue but we couldn't get any much worse! lol

DJyellow 04-01-2008 09:13 PM

Since Begin came back, their PK has bęn much better

1UP 04-01-2008 09:14 PM

Begin has a lot to say about it.

Smolinski is also playing well lately. Tonight vs Ottawa, he was solid.

chris96 04-01-2008 09:14 PM

BEgin, Smokes, Gorges and Price are the main reasons

Beakermania* 04-01-2008 09:16 PM

I didn't say Price was the only reason... just the biggest reason....

Credit goes to Begin... his return from injury is huge
Smoke has worked harder lately.

Carbo/Jarvis finally has the boys playing better on the PK... can't overlook those two aswell....

But i think goaltending on the PK is a huge factor.... Its glaringly obvious 5 on 3, and can be overlooked 5 on 4 and 4 on 3, but its huge in my mind.

Steve Bégin.

Ice Poutine 04-01-2008 09:38 PM

I'm thinking that we have had much needed practice since lately the team was taking a lot of bad penalties. Maybe its as simple as that.

LeMAD 04-01-2008 09:39 PM

Bégin and Kovalev are doing a good job on the PK.

Carbonneau played everyone on the PK this year, but since a few games he seems to go with his best players.

Raider917 04-01-2008 09:42 PM

the last 6 games have been exceptionally good. 35/36 for 97.22%. theyve gone from 80.34% to 82.18%

Stradale 04-01-2008 09:46 PM

Carey Price is not only the goaler on PK but the 3rd defensemen aswell.

Trexim 04-01-2008 09:49 PM

PK 82.4 tied for 15th I beleive. They were 23rd just a couple of weeks ago.

Current streak is 1/36

Pretty darn good.

Sthabs 04-01-2008 11:42 PM

I believe they knew they were good at it all year long, just not as commited, now they re making a statement

Turboflex* 04-01-2008 11:45 PM

Begin huge, Lapierre has improved a lot over the season. Can't fault Higgings, Koivu, Kovalev, Smolenski, Kostopolous, Plekanics either. I think this is something the coaches have been working on all season and now it's starting to click.

superstar436 04-01-2008 11:49 PM

If I am not mistaken, gagnon on la zone was saying lately that the yare playing a smaller box so a change of strategy is probably one of the reasons.

Begin is also a factor.

Team_Spirit 04-01-2008 11:50 PM

That was really the only concern going into the playoffs. I agree about Price puck control and Bégin return, that was huge.

Begin is totally badass on the pk.

Your best Penalty Killer is always your Goalie.
Price is a much better Penalty Killer than Huet, no doubt about that.

Now, Begin-Smokes-Gorges-Hamrlik-Markov-Kovalev-Plekanec-Higgins-Kostopoulos-Lapierre are also very important.

HabsPack 04-02-2008 12:17 AM

It's because they aren't playing a passive PK, the Habs have decided to go aggressive, no more of that four man box and sit, they've going to attack, attack ...it's about time!

The fact we have a lot of players able to play PK, some of them staying an offensive threat throughout, is a force. We're not in trouble if a top PKer like Begin or Smolinski or Komisarek takes a penalty, others can step up.

Actually, it's the same for the PP, for offense, defense, goaltending...

mcphee 04-02-2008 07:41 AM

Begin helps, and the shot blocking tends to elevate everybody, but I agree with Price. Point shots were the problem and Price just takes up more net.

I think they've pressured the points more. Higgins,Plekanec and Lapierre all can do this. Koivu and Kovalev tend to try and block lanes, but I think that the guys with the quick feet have changed the way they arroach the pk a bit.

I go back to when I first saw Higgins and Pleks playing with the Dogs. They preessured every puck at the point and were dangerous. We're seeing this again.
