Carey Price is HF's #3 top prospect

http://www.hockeysfuture.com/article...spring2008110/

The top three is justified, and I like the part of 1a, 1b and 1c. However, they mention that the Habs traded up to get him. Didn't we get the 5th overall pick via lottery?

Yes, lottery.

Wasn't he 3rd last year also?

I think HF really needs to change the qualification for being a prospect.

Patrick Kane has "graduated", but Johnson, Toews and Price have not and the only reason is that the first two got hurt and the last one is a goalie.

3. Carey Price, G Montreal Canadiens
Height: 6'2, Weight: 175

NHL.com says 226. He sure as hell doesn't look 175, can anyone confirm?

He doesn't really look 226, but I'd suggest NHL.com is right since they use the media guide, which uses throwing him on the scales in pre-season.

That said, teams cheat. Bob Bassen was once a hockey instructor of mine and he told us how his trainer secretly shoved weights into his shorts and shoes during his rookie year so he could cheat the NHL weigh-in. He was really scrawny and they didn't want other teams to know they could just toss him off the puck.

That also said, Price is a goalie and there is no reason to cheat! =)

Well :

- HockeyDB says 6"3 226lbs
- NHLPA.com says 6"2 222lbs
- NHL.com says 6"3 226lbs
- TSN says 6"3 212lbs
- Sportsnet says 6"3 226lbs
- HF says 6"2 175lbs

All of them are pretty close except for HF so it seems that Price is all but 175lbs.

I also noticed the mention that we traded for the 5th that year but unless i missed something i don't think that it's accurate.

I think those are the stats of when he was drafted.

He's now 6'3" and I'd say 226 is quite possible. He looks about the same size as Kovalev.

but i'd much rather see Kovalev skating on the ice, bearing down on goal..... hahaha

Hawkguy 04-08-2008 08:47 AM

I never really put much into HF Rankings. They never seem to make much sense. Overrate some guys, underrate others.

I would say Toews, Kane, and Price all graduated.. so I wouldn't even count them as prospects.

If a player hits 41 games (half the season) in his rookie year, I wouldn't be counting them as a prospect anymore.

Price, Toews, and Kane will all never play another AHL game, unless its a conditioning stint.

I was just about to come over and ask that. He surely looks thicker than Rask. Rask is a toothpick.

226 seems heavy though but you guys would know better.

Hawkguy 04-08-2008 08:58 AM

ESPN also has him at 226.

So I'd say, he probably weighs anywhere from 220-230.

Hermamoud 04-08-2008 09:08 AM

They probably just never bothered changing his stats since draft day

Lone Rogue 04-08-2008 09:19 AM

Shouldn't Toews and Price be considered graduated?

I'm sick of seeing Bobby Ryan on the list. He just doesn't seem to be excelling in the NHL game. He is going to be a 3rd/4th liner at best.

The guy is barely 21, give him a break. Most players don't become solid top 6 forwards until they are at least close to their mid 20's.

Ryan is better than A. Kostitsyn was at the same age. Is Kostitsyn a top 6 forward? Definitely. Plekanec didn't become a NHL regular until he was 23 and he definitely wasn't a top 6 forward then and he is now a solid top 2 centerman.

Ryan is well on pace to become a top 6 forward, but maybe you're right and he'll top out as a bottom 6 forward. That said, he is still a very good prospect.

YMCMBeaulieu 04-08-2008 09:33 AM

Why is Josh Harding still ranked so high? He's turning 24 this year and was given the chance this year to take the starter's job when Backstrom was out but faltered in MINNESOTA where even Manny Fernandez looked like an elite goalie. Josh is a good goalie but come on #11 is bit high.

To add, power forwards always take longer as well. Same logic as someone saying Latendresse is a bust.

Yeah, I agree. They have 21 year old Letang who has 70 games over two seasons on the list. Kane, Johnson, Toews, Price should all be off the list.

It's nice to see Boston has their own Carey Price in Tukka Rask. :sarcasm:

Ah, you haven't seen pics of Price in a t-shirt, haven't you? The size of his arms and chest suggest that for his 6'3 frame, he sure as hell is close to 230. Haven't you seen him push players around, and not the smallest one at that. I am 175 and between 5'11 a 6'0 in height, and Price has much bigger arms than mine (and I don't sport a belly). I just can't believe someone is doubting his 225 figure, especially considering his built and height.

HF is the ONLY site that has him at his Junior weight and height and his one of the few sites which doesn't update bios regularly.

It's just laughable to think Price is still under 200 when he's able to push around players like Neil and the like.

Love your new SinWincity av BTW.

I can agree to that, then.

I just feel that whenever I've watched Ryan on the ice, he looks like a football player who got drugged and just woke up wearing some hockey states. He seems out of his element.

Mousepad* 04-08-2008 10:33 AM

My father is 6'2 185 LBS and he looks like a tooth pick compared to Carey Price and doesn't have a belly. Price's at least 200.

Yeah....since he was drafted out of Midget AAA.

anarmandaleb 04-08-2008 10:41 AM

Price is definitely in the 220-230 range.
EDIT: If not heavier.

Lone Rogue 04-08-2008 10:45 AM

I think people are just shocked to think he can move the way he does at his weight. They just don't watch enough pro wrestling :)

The Undertaker amazes me on how he can do all that stuff on such a large frame, at his age.

It's crazy.
