Nichol To Miss Remainder of Series with Broken Thumb

Predators center Scott Nichol has a broken left thumb, is scheduled to undergo surgery this afternoon in Nashville and will miss at least the remainder of the Predators-Red Wings playoff series.

He’s expected to be sidelined 2-3 weeks.

Took a shot off his hand on the second penalty kill in the first period and left the game. Big loss to the PK and also with Legwand's situation up in the air. Nichol is an energy player who is having a career year and has also developed into a real leader on this team over the past two years. Even bigger opportunity for Rich Peverley to step up his role and the need is as great as ever for Radek Bonk to get going.

This is a huge loss for the Preds, particularly with Legwand out. Too bad.

Its sad that a guy like Nichol is such a big part of this team, but it is, regrettably, true.

I guess this means that we will start seeing Hordichuk for 3 shifts per game? Better get on the horn with Milwaukee.

You want to talk about a perfect example of why you never question a player's desire to get back into the lineup after an injury...

Nichol broke his thumb right at the base of the digit blocking a slap shot (wrong place, wrong time - not by design) from Lidstrom in game 1 of the series. Had surgery the next day to insert screws. Had the cast removed Friday, skated with a stick for the first time Saturday, and played a solid game with it Sunday - just 10 days after breaking the thumb!!!

Normally this is a 4-6 week injury in the regular season, 2-3 week injury with accelerated rehab for the playoffs, but he made it back in 10 days!!!

This quote in the City Paper today I think sums it all up:

“I was sick of sitting up there and watching these guys battle tooth and nail,” said Nichol. “My doctor went to a conference in Phoenix, and there were a lot of hand specialists there. He showed my films and where he put my screws.

“They unanimously thought that if I could fit my hand in a glove and deal with it, then I was good to go. If something happened, then we could put another screw in it. I just wish I could have done more.

Scotty "Angry Smurf" Nichol...you have my admiration. Thank you!!!

Yeah if this was a player from any other sport he's definitely out for 6 weeks. Baseball player would have been done for 12 weeks. That is why I love hockey, hell Jarret Stoll took a puck in the ear that game against the Canucks, had it stitched back together and ended up scoring the GW the next period to help us clinch our playoff birth. That in a game that didn't mean anything to the Oilers. Legwand after game 4, I noticed barley walking back to the locker room limping badly. Along with most hockey players, Nichol Legwand, and Stoll are real men, in a real sport, with a real heart for their sport.:handclap::handclap:

Nichol - his meaning to this team is immeasurable. From his fall from grace last year in the playoffs, to getting as second chance and being one of the best leaders this team has had on the ice in its history.....

I hope he is back next year. Granted, I hope it is on the fourth line ;).
