Martin to stay

http://www.miamiherald.com/623/story/496883.html

Quote:

Jacques Martin told the South Florida media Tuesday afternoon he would return to the Florida Panthers as its general manager.

Martin spoke publically for the first time since owner Alan Cohen revealed that Martin would not be serving as Panthers coach in 2008-09. Martin had been the Panthers' coach the past three seasons and had served as both general manager and coach for the past two.

''My intentions are to remain as general manager of the Panthers,'' he said. ``It's important to let you know that today. I'm excited to continue my work with the organization.''

As Cohen said before, Martin will be selecting his successor as coach.

The Panthers ended their season April 5 with a 3-1 loss at Washington.
Thanks for the great work George!

Welcome to the Florida Panthers Randy Cunneyworth.

hoax15 04-15-2008 03:19 PM

Sweet! Only bad thing is most likely no Hartley. Cunneyworth as new HC i'm going to guess.

Laus723 04-15-2008 03:29 PM

Gorten repoting in, only Biggane's left out now. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/h...,5787107.story

Good news, many now get what we asked for. Martin to stay as GM, I just hope Hartley becomes the HC.

Crossbar 04-15-2008 04:07 PM

I speculate Perry Pearn would be first on Martin's list. JM was after him earlier for a position in the organization (this year or last, I forget), but Perry turned it down to stay in NY....I'm sure a head coaching position will be a lot more appealing than assisting Tom Renney.

VirtualSpree 04-15-2008 04:20 PM

Well, that's reassuring news.

zeroG 04-15-2008 04:35 PM

there is a dark lining in this silver cloud: now that cohen has a full time GM, it's harder to imagine him bringing in a director of hockey operations. that means, same old, same old in terms of the organizational structure. JM should be exec VP as well but we really need a VP/director of hockey operations. that sounds like something newy could have slipped into (ala george mcphee). too bad.

Only time will tell if this was a great move or not. Here's to hoping it is. :)

My Feelings About It

My feelings of Martin returning as I posted on GR's Blog.

"This is OK news, I am able to contain my enthusiasm about it, if Martin 1.Doesn't trade Jokinen (I can't imagine a LOGICAL trade, no one is going to trade a Crosby-type player in a Jokinen deal, of Jokinen that would make the Panthers stronger). 2.Hires, or is allowed to hire by Cohen, Randy Cunneyworth as Head Coach instead of a retread with a more impressive resume filled with glory of years ago.

This is good. I'm so happy about Martin staying as I am about some front office stability for once.

Let's hope he steps it up. No more lame Stumpel contracts, please. And make sure you do your homework before executing trades.

Martin's List of Attributes For New Coach

"Martin said he will begin putting together a list of attributes he would like to have in a new coach"

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/sports/...6panthers.html

Can't help but have a little fun with Martin's list.
1.Always remember, the object of the game is not to lose.
2.Share in the joy and beauty of the 1-0 shutout.
3.One goal leads are as good as a half a dozen goals.
4.Never crack a smile behind the bench.
5.Never show a frown behind the bench.
6.Ingrained in your soul is the certain knowledge that the GM is always right.
7.Belief that Jacques Martin is the one, true  HOCKEY GOD

Feel free to add to the list.:D

He's a rising coaching star, he's an ex-NHL player and former Captain and he is familiar with the Panthers younger players.

Laus723 04-15-2008 05:24 PM

From Biggane:

Quote:

He said he expected his coaching search to be a lengthy process. He said a coach with NHL experience could be preferable, "considering where our team is right now.

"An individual that has a proven history in dealing with NHL players is always an asset, as opposed to a coach coming up from juniors," he added.
Since it's Biggane, take it for what it's worth. Not sure how much to believe him, expecially since Cohen went onto the official boards and called him out.

I got 2 out of 3 wishes so far - Martin out as HC, Martin stays as GM. Let's see who the new HC is.

VAiN* 04-15-2008 06:08 PM

Great, an owner who admittedly doesn't know hockey that let's the guy he just canned pick his own replacement. Imagine this playing out in your job/workplace. I feel good about next year.

+1 on that. Especially from JM's comment - don't hold your breath on that guy being here.

Aquallini in Vancouver is picking a new GM. He is a real estate developer. Do you think he knows more about hockey than Cohen?

Awesome...me too! Glad we're all able to see how wise it is to keep Martin here.

pb1300 04-15-2008 06:53 PM

Its going to be Cunneyworth or Hartley. Even though they dont see eye to eye, Hartley has proved to be a succesful NHL coach. Cunneyworth is from the minors, but he was Martin's captain in Ottawa, and he is more than ready for a NHL gig. Wilson might be available from SJ if they get bounced out of the first again, or maybe Nolan like we said before. But if I was a betting man, its going to be Cunneyworth.

how's that workin' out for him so far??? the guy gets you your franchise goaltender in a humongous steal of a trade and you give him ONE year to build a team around him? now nonis seemed to get really conservative this offseason but for all we know, he had a 2-3 year plan to get that offense in place (in truth, given luongo's contract, he really didn't have that long but stilll...). we don't know what the agreement was between nonis and the owner but that's really not the way you're going to be successful long term.

Tom Hicks is a Real Estate Developer and he choose the co-gms? Never heard of that, but i am assuming if they didnt finish the season so strongly or kicked Anaheim's butt in the playoffs, you would probably say he didnt get it right either.

Should i go on?

I would say 90% of the owners pick the GM and other than Mario, no owner has played hockey.

Whats in your diaper? ;)

Happy Girl 04-15-2008 07:26 PM

Tom Hicks also has Jim Lites as the President of sports marketing group. Lites has significant hockey experience. Hicks doesn't have to be so involved with the day to day operations.

Ehhh... I'm on the fence about it. He had 3 seasons and didn't produce anything worth mentioning. But next year is the one. (yeah right) I expect this team to continue being bottom dwellers for a loooooooong time. I hope I'm wrong, but I give up on this team.
