Reflecting on past Flyer playoff battles

Now that Montreal/Philadelphia is set,

I'd like to take a look back at the previous playoff series the Habs won against Philly: 1973, 1976 and 1989.

Feel free to wax poetic on these great battles of Habitant past.

Darn, I wanted to wax about 1987

I didn't want to make any of you Hab fans upset and bring up a series they lost.

Ah yes I remember it as if it were yesterday *eyes glaze over as they reminisce of greater times*

Courageous, triumphant and spectacular are three words that come to mind whenever I think of that 72 habs team. Such a victorious playoff run was never made as the one accomplished by the habs in 72. What a year.. what a magnificent year.. oh yes.. oh yes..

Ahhhh Bobby Smith....

Hello Al Bundy.

This is going to be awesome... I really don't like the Flyers and there's been some decent rivalry over the last 2-years.

Here's the recent playoff history:

87 had the pre-game brawl:

89 had Chelios on Propp... huge elbow at 0:04

the aftermath

Then Hextall on Chelios. Twas a great series

... but 1987 was so much more fun. :D

I remember 87, Dave Brown coming out without a jersey, what a punk. Tough as nails but still a ******** move when both Nilan and Kordic are fully dressed.

Half the guys came out undressed, some didn't even have skates on.

Nilan did pretty well too, considering the opponent (i think Brown is possibly the best fighter ever in the NHL)...

It was Hospodar who took exception to Lemieux and Corson scoring in the Flyers net at the end of the pre-game skate around. I hated Hospodar. Clark Gilles re-arranged his face when he was a Ranger, broken jaw, orbital bone the whole nine yards. Served Hospodar right, who was a spot-picker. the upper-cut that did the damage is at 0:04. Hockey was crazy in the 80's.

Half the guys were also content to pair off and stand around but Brown knew he had an advantage over the Habs heavyweights and wanted to go, which kicked the whole thing off. Corson didn't even jump Hospadar while he was pummeling Claude Lemieux. If the shoe was on the other foot, would Brown want any part of a jerseyless Nilan or Kordic?

Edit: I'm trying to manufacture some dislike before the series kicks off. ;)

I liked Brown, I just think it's bush league to go looking for a scrap a la Rob Ray. Wait until the playing field is leveled during the game, it's not like Kordic or Nilan wouldn't have obliged Brown then.

Man, there were some tough mofos in that series. The Habs alone had Nilan, Kordic, Ludwig, Corson, Lemieux, McPhee, Skrudland, Carbo, and Gainey, and they were considered the weaker team.

Carbo N8 04-23-2008 10:43 AM

Ahhh..... Nilan & Kordic

I completely agree... very opportunistic. Looked like something out of the LNAH

Add Chelios, Robinson
