Are we being modeled after Detroit or Dallas?

Is Gainey trying to build a puck pursuit team (Dallas) or a puck possession team (Detroit)?

If so, maybe we can do a position-by-position breakdown between the three teams to see the differences in talent level right now?

With guys like Sergei Kostitsyn, Koivu, Kovalev and even Markov, i'd say were gonna be a puck possession team.

We are definetely puck possession....

C-Saku Koivu MTL 05-08-2008 07:39 PM

Puck possesion for sure. Something we kind of got away from in the playoff for some reason. But look at Detroit, they went through hard times in the playoffs recently but this year....look out! Hopefully with a teak here and there we can become as dominant as they are.

habs1988 05-08-2008 07:40 PM

Definitely puck possession.

Kovalev is the best.

Kost. brothers love to control the puck. Higgins keeps it while protecting it successfuly.

Koivu loves to make the transition with the puck while HOSSA will be able to do everything with it :yo:

Finally, I think that Plekanec is both but he likes to go in the offensive zone with the puck, stop at the circle and pass it at the point.

As for the d-man, only Markov controls it so well. Streit pursues the puck alot but except these two, the other d-men are not good enough to rush the puck until the offensive zone.

Detroit can play that dump and chase game really well too

We do it too when teams line up 4 at the blue line against us.....

Sometimes we do it well.... Games 1 and 7 vs Boston, most of the series vs Philly....

Sometimes not so well.... on the PP in game 3 vs Philly.... games 2-6 vs Boston.

I hope that soon we'll be a "Holmstrom/Frenzen" in your face and in the crease type of team....

we need more swedes!

coolguy21415 05-08-2008 08:05 PM

Given how this game is going.. hopefully Detroit.

Actually, Detroit would be my choice. Dallas is a tough, checking team. Not unlike Philly in my mind.
Detroit's possession game is similar to what I think the Habs are trying to achieve.

dlandry77 05-08-2008 08:26 PM

I would say somewhat similar to the Dallas Stars when Gainey was the GM when they won the cup.

But now I would say we are very similar to the Detroit Red Wings. Not a bad choice at all.

We need either more american players or Canadian. Not very many but 2 or 3 would be awesome. Rolston would be one them if we got him.

yeah. russians are scary. ovechkin, datsyuk, kovalchuk - scary good.

MathMan 05-08-2008 08:48 PM

Puck possession.

It was part of the sea change this season. Go for a defensive, trapping, dump-and-chase team (often, dump-and-don't-chase) to an offensive-minded, speedy puck-possession club that relies on passing and high-percentage shots. When they said it was Kovalev's team now, this is what they meant -- Kovalev is a quintessential puck-possession player.

The Detroit model is not a bad one. Strong throughout, deep, lots of players with European style but a fair amount of grit as well. Montreal is too young to be Detroit yet, but the seeds certainly are planted.

apparently Habs are now targeting Flabien

Were the front runners

Exactly!!!!!!

I only watched the first 4 goals tonight. Three of them Detroit had someone planted in front of the nets.

Sthabs 05-08-2008 11:14 PM

I hope we ll do that more next year, guys like Lats should be parked in front of the net screening goalies, thats all he should do, take rebounds and cycle the puck on the boards.

coolguy21415 05-08-2008 11:21 PM

People can say "less Europeans" and I have no problem with it. However, at the moment Montreal has exactly two Russians on the team -- Kovalev and Markov. Yeah.. fewer of them.

The reason Detroit does it so well is because they have some size to go with their skill. They hang onto the puck, get it low, then have a short passing game to get lots of shots with someone parked out front.

We have NOBODY who can park out front. So Hossa is really not the guy we need if you think about it. We need someone who can stay at the net.

I don't know why Latendresse can't do it. Maybe Pacioretty can?

Shabutie 05-08-2008 11:28 PM

Definitely puck pursuit. I wish we were more puck possesion, it's the perfect type of game for the majority of our players.

That, and we need big canadian boys to go in front of the net, like Holmstrom and Franzen.
