Rangers to offer Sundin 7 Million?

I was reading Andy Strickland's blog from May 9th. The bottom has an interesting blurb:

Word is the New York Rangers will offer Maple Leafs Captain Mats Sundin 7 million a season this summer. I find that a little crazy with the other centermen they have in the mix.
What do you think?

NYReign 05-23-2008 02:48 PM

I can't imagine that to be honest. If anything it would have to be as a replacement to Jagr and if we lose him I think we may opt to save some money and start rebuilding a little bit.

Quite interesting. I think if it were to happen, Drury would have to move to the wing and probably means that Jagr will not re-sign with the Rangers. I really don't see it happening though

NYR Viper 05-23-2008 02:51 PM

maybe jagr said he would take 5 million or less if the rangers signed sundin for one year to play with him....?

UAGoalieGuy 05-23-2008 02:53 PM

Who would Sundin center, either if Jagr returns or does not return?

Hmm, I didn't think about that. I was going into the offseason focused on getting someone to play on Gomer's wing, but if we put Drury there then signing a center is an option. Still have no idea if this would work out under the cap since we would still need to improve the back line and if we couldn't sign both him and Jags I wouldn't look at him. Rather have Jagr only than Sundin only, though if we can fit in both and get Orpik it would definitely be worth looking into.

If we get both I'd have

Avery-Sundin-Jagr
Dawes-Gomez-Drury
Prucha-Dubie-Cally
Sjostrom-Betts-Korp

to start with but who knows? And looking at that I really don't see how we could fit it under the cap... Unless we defer money again but I don't want to go into that after the Shanny thing.

Bluenote13 05-23-2008 02:55 PM

This was already discussed in another thread when that piece was written.

Its not happening.

TheHotRock 05-23-2008 02:56 PM

i'm on board for this

forward lines would look sick this way:

Straka/Avery-Sundin-Jagr
Drury-Gomez-Dawes
Korp-Dubi-Callahan
Sjo-Betts-Orr

Sundin and Jagr would probably end their careers at the same time and you'd have a huge chunk of change coming off the books and would eb able to retool on the fly. I like it. I'd much rather pay Sundin 7 mil a year for 2 years than dish out 8plus to a guy like Hossa for 6-7 years.

Blueshirt Brawler 05-23-2008 02:56 PM

That is insane. His hip problem isn't getting any better and he's not worth that kind of money even on a one year deal. I think this is crazy speculation.

Reimer 05-23-2008 02:58 PM

Strickland is an idiot, I wouldn't believe anything he says.

BlueBlooded 05-23-2008 02:59 PM

Bad deal, I doubt Sather is that dumb.

FutureGM97 05-23-2008 03:00 PM

i guess everyone forgets about getting old players....just because we have had 2 good years doesn't mean that we can start signing old guys again. This team needs to keep playing the young guns and building with them, not signing high priced old guys.

ogie 05-23-2008 03:05 PM

no thanks! 7mil for one overaged player when we can get both Ryder and Huselius for the same price.

Forechecker 05-23-2008 03:25 PM

Please God, let their be some real news about ANYTHING soon...

geisenNYR 05-23-2008 03:29 PM

I can't see the rangers paying sundin 7 million dollars. He is getting older and he is an injury risk. The last thing this team needs is another old man who will play 40-50 games. He is a great player but I would much rather spend that money on Hossa or Campbell.

Ahahaha, an overaged Sundin will do alot more than these two combined. Just out of curiosity what is an overaged NHLer?

I think the bloggers are already bored and are just pulling crap out of their ass.

And I know everyone here is bored, cause you all keep eating up whatever they post. ;)

hmmm sundin is intresting, and he is a swede so i can see it working. sundin is a very good player.

NYR fan 2 05-23-2008 03:38 PM

I don't think it's if the Rangers will sign Sundin, rather if Sundin will sign anywhere outside of Toronto. At the trade deadline he was very adamant about finishing his career as a Maple Leaf. So I do not see this happening at all.

klingsor 05-23-2008 03:48 PM

In the cap era, I cannot think of a worse way for this team to spend $7 million dollars except for another goalie.

SupersonicMonkey* 05-23-2008 03:59 PM

Who in their right mind would offer 37 year old Sundin 7 mil/year?

If any GM in the NHL offers him that, they should be fired on the spot.

Fire Wilson 05-23-2008 04:00 PM

I dont see how Sundin would not be great for your team? He is turning 38, and just had an outstanding season last year, yet again with no talent. Barring a freak accident, he'll play 65 games next year AT LEAST. In the playoffs, he'll be a monster after not being there for so long.

However, only way Sundin does not come back to Toronto is if we do not offer him around $6 Million next seaso.

He is worth that easily if it is a one or two year deal, maybe even three. The guy is still crazy good.

hgo 05-23-2008 04:02 PM

Salary cap?

Even if it goes up next year, I don't see how the Rangers would fit him under it if they plan on re-signing Jagr. Especially at a 7 million hit.

NYR Viper 05-23-2008 04:02 PM

i wonder if sather would offer him a deal for 5 million like shanny's last year and let some of it roll over to next year.....i would love to see sundin-dubi-jagr first line
