1980-81 Rangers- How did they go as far as they did?
In 1980-81, a mediocre, no-name Rangers team that finished 30-36-14 with 74 points somehow managed to make it to the Stanley Cup Semifinals.

Their leading scorer, Anders Hedberg, had a mere 70 points.
(In contrast, Brian Leetch had 80 assists by himself one year!)

I know the Rangers have had a history of hot goalies in the Beezer, Richter, King Henrik, and JD, but their main goalies that year was Steve Baker.

Somehow, they managed to beat a Kings team w/all three members of the Triple Crown line scoring 100 points, Larry Murphy as a rookie, and Mario Lessard, who led all NHL goalies that year in wins.

Also, they beat a Blues team with the league's best goalie in Mike Liut and a potent and deep offense.

That Ranger team... beat those teams.

How the heck did that happen?

How the hell did a below-average team with little talent go as far as they did?

Duguay & Greschner having the best playoffs of their careers.
