Pierre-Marc Bouchard as a rfa signing?

I know it's quite unpopular here, prospects fans, but why not sign Pierre-Marc Bouchard?

Here's some arguments :
1. East division is not competitive, so it's easy for the habs to finish in the top 4, meaning late draft pick each rounds.

2. Habs prospects depth is good, so we can spare some picks.

3. We need a replacement for Kovalev at RW

4. Minnessota wild can hardly match a strong offer.

Here's what i would offer to P-M B :

35 millions for 6 years (5,83 millions per year)

Over $4,687,530 to $5,859,412
Two first-round choices
one second
third-round choice.

I know it's a lot of money but it's not a big reach from Kovalev(4.5) to 5.8. We saved money with good signing (a.k, markov).

I think we don't have that 2nd Round Pick anymore.. Unless we trade to get it back from Calgary, you must change your offer :P

Mike The Wall 07-09-2008 11:59 AM

are you willing to have teams go after Price, Komo, Higgins, Kostitsyns etc... I am not so lay low in the weeds do not cause any waves we will be ok.

Ozymandias 07-09-2008 11:59 AM

- Too small, we already have enough of those.
- I highly doubt Gainey would make an offersheet to a RFA
- You only do an offersheet to a RFA when you are desperate and your prospects cupboard is empty and don't have many RFAs
- Making such an offer leaves a wide open door for future retaliations

Pierre Dagenais 07-09-2008 11:59 AM

I'm the biggest PM Bouchard fan on the planet since his Chicoutimi days but he is one hell of a soft player and not worth 5.83 million

Ice Poutine 07-09-2008 12:00 PM

Gainey has said that he doesnt like the RFA system and wont offer any contract to any player. Why speculate now? Lets just wait till next year and get him as a UFA.

BadKiwi 07-09-2008 12:01 PM

I prefer the "Vancouver" take at it. We contact Mini, tell them we are interested in him and we could make a trade offer similar to the offer sheet we would have sent in terms of value.

Cyrrus147 07-09-2008 12:02 PM

Yea and in two years Minnesota will get his revenge and hand a offer sheet to Carey Price. We have too many RFA coming in the next few years to start playing this game. Look at what St-Louis did with Vancouver.

And btw do we really need a other featherweight center ?

I'd never do that for many reasons...

1-he is another small player, not much of a factor come playoff time

2-he's not worth close to 6 mil

3-If we are to overpay, go get a UFA and keep your draft picks.

I think you need to keep your 1st rounders and keep the pipeline pumping out young players, I don't want to relive the late 90's of a team full of Dackell's and Juneau's.

Analyzer 07-09-2008 12:06 PM

Waste of picks.

Galchenyuk x 27 07-09-2008 12:08 PM

I prefer we stay away from RFA's

Dont need to lose picks or have GM's offering absurd contracts to our RFA's next year

Pere Noel 07-09-2008 07:40 PM

A) Gainey is saving the money for a center. A guy like say... Sundin

B) That's a lot of draft picks to give away, and in the process alienate Minnesota who may end up matching anyway, since they have the cap space.

C) I think we can put the money towards a better right wing down the road. Kovalev is as we speak a better investment. And for the longer run, some other right wing will come about (maybe from inside the organization so even cheaper)

Garo 07-09-2008 07:57 PM

Bouchard can't be offered a contract anyway.

So, you want the Habs to sign a guy for a truck load of money and give up a bunch of draft choices who is on the smaller side and in (nearly) 5 full NHL seasons has had one (1) 20 goal campaign?

WOW? Sounds like a great move to me!
:sarcasm:

Now, if the Habs could get Ovechkin or Crosby for a similar price -- you might have something there!

I think you better stick to just reporting rumors from the Habs brass and not try be a GM. By the way , thanks for all your inside info....that is what makes these boards so great for Hab fans !!!!

I'm not saying we should go ahead and make an offer sheet for Bouchard. But even if Gainey does decide to lay low, if a team wants to take a shot at one of our future RFA's. I don't think it's going to make a difference in an opposing GM's mind weither Gainey gets involved in RFA poaching or not.

GM's are making offer sheets to available RFA's to help their own team. Not to punish another team for attempting to do so. So either way, if Gainey doesn't have those players signed, and allows them to become RFA's, they will be at risk.

FrankMTL 07-10-2008 09:05 AM

As much as I like the Kid, I just don't think he is what this teams needs. We don't need another small talented forward...especially P.M. who is really not very physical at all....

There was a thread on this exact subject started a few days back

Rocket Jr. 07-10-2008 09:08 AM

Stay away from RFA, as we can see a team is now built with draft choices.
I don't think Gainey would go for a pissing contest with Risbrough.

We still have the CAPS 2nd round choice in 2009 (Huet trade)

Fine, but it does not change the fact that you cannot use someone else's 2nd round pick for an offer sheet. ;)

It doesn't matter, to make the offer sheet as the OP suggested. We would have to have our own (Habs) 2nd rd pick. We can't substitute it with another.

Edit: lol...I didn't see BadKiwi's post when I replied.

Regardless, the value as proposed would be counted as 7 million per season and not require a 2nd round pick as compensation.

It's not worth the risk of Gainey losing respect from his fellow Gms imo
