It's work in progress, they realized they can't support it. Much better than taking part and then failing midway through the season.

What would the 4th foreign club be?

With probability 99% Khimik Voskresensk will replace Avtomobilist, not foreign club.

only fair, very storied franchise. But the league is starting on a wrong foot, loosing a team before the things even got going...I expect Riga and Minsk eventually to drop out as well. Kazahstan has money so the amount of teams from there will increase...IMHO

Metallian* 07-15-2008 07:05 PM

in all fairness this is a VL team...

Colonel 07-17-2008 10:54 PM

It's official: Automobilist out - Khimik in.

I'm sure many more will join that team before too long

malkinfan 07-18-2008 02:03 PM

I thought that Minsk was a real hot spot for hockey?

cska78 07-18-2008 05:36 PM

so is Riga, but what about money? It was just an IMHO, i could be way off though.

Minsk is owned by a very rich guy and Riga is owned by 6 guys along with the energy company Itera Latvija. Money doesn't seem to be an issue.

I heard some fuss about the rinks. What are the capacities, sellout %'s, likelyhood of new rinks?

We have a whole board now, you can create a thread and ask it there.

deanosaur 07-22-2008 02:43 AM

That's the plan. ;) That's why it's called the Continental Hockey League instead of the Super-Duper Soviet League or something like that.

shoothepuck 07-23-2008 08:21 AM

Sounds like the XFL to me..

I think the league would rival the NHL if it could plant teams all over Europe.

Lowetide 07-23-2008 09:25 AM

Oh hell, this is bound to happen. I can't imagine the degree of difficulty involved in forming a new sports league. EVERY league has franchise shifts and lots of leagues have had teams shut down. Oakland Seals, Montreal Expos, Seattle Sonics, St. Louis Cardinals.

The positive from this is it happened during the offseason so balanced schedules, etc are maintained.

The Eisbaeren Berlin would be the natural candidate for expansion to Germany, but as they are owned by Anschutz, I deem it to be highly unlikely, that they (and thus any German team) will take part in the KHL anytime (soon).

Metallian* 07-23-2008 12:32 PM

why wouldnt anshutz want a stake in both ventures?

Snoil11 07-23-2008 04:19 PM

As Anschutz has to sell out a new venue, I cannot see him leaving the DEL and joining the KHL. Although there aren't any local rivals left, I suppose, that the fanbase in Berlin would not support a move to the KHL.
Moreover, Anschutz was awarded two NHL-games in his new venue in London last year and the NHL will send the Tampa Bay Lightnings to Berlin for a delayed opening game of the O2-world arena in September, so I reckon, that Anschutz rather puts all his eggs in the North-American basket than displease the league's headquarter with a KHL-membership.
