re: Chelios claims he only made $35,000 when he played in Montréal

Remember last Spring when Chelios claimed that in his early Habs days, he made so little money after taxes that he had to borrow from Serge Savard to cover his living expenses? Most people were skeptical and quipped that Crescent St. orgies and SAQ binges are not taxes, etc. (I couldn't find the thread.)

Well anyway, the poster skeena1 posted a site where you can see the annual salary of every NHL player since 1989-90, and it seems like Chelios wasn't lying. http://www.hockeyzoneplus.com/bizdb/...ies-search.htm

Most young players in 89-90 were making in the low 3-figures, some were making even less: Joe Sakic was in his 2nd season and making $86,330.

Anyway, rewind to '83 or '85, and with the way salaries were increasing it seems quite likely that a young rook like Chelios would only have been making $40k or so.

Note that by 89-90, Chelios was in his 7th season and making $496,398 a nice chunk of change for the time.

amazing site

peperebougon* 07-30-2008 03:44 AM

he played here 132 years ago. That was a lot then.

snakeye 07-30-2008 03:54 AM

Very interesting site. Was searching players trying to find who earned the most in a single season. Sakic 17 mil per season :amazed:

I think it was the Rangers offer sheet? .. Regardless the Avs made a good deal, Sakic only earned 4M the next 2 years.

Among the top paid players i think Jagr is #1 with his $98,038,851 + that new 35M deal he signed in Russia.

Yeah, the Rangers signed him to a 3-year, $21 million offer sheet in 1997 but in an attempt to prevent Colorado from matching it was amazingly front-loaded with a $15 million signing bonus. So when the Avs did match Sakic made 15+2 = $17 million the first year and then $2 million each of the next two years.

Why doesnt the NHL do more like these...they would be a marketing monster

SpreeEndaz 07-30-2008 08:48 AM

Chelios claims he can still play hockey, that doesn't make it true either.

toshiro 07-30-2008 09:26 AM

Could Chelios be any worse than Brisebois for our 7th defencemen???

I don't think he could do any worse and he would surely add some toughness and grit to our blueline over Brisebois....thats for sure....but he wouldn't help us out in the offensive department quite as much.

Habsfunk 07-30-2008 10:58 AM

He should have budgeted better. I don't even make that much today but I can still live fine, eat well, go out drinking, and afford one vacation a year, and still save a little.

shutehinside 07-30-2008 11:13 AM

Holy sweet baby jesus! Jagr is close to $100 MM! And he had to go to Russia for the money!? Wow.

Blades 0f Steel 07-30-2008 11:27 AM

I've heard that Selanne has made over 100 million, mostly due to endorsements in Finland. Not sure how true that is though.

I could see that as possible.... Michael Jordan used to make 4-5 times his NBA salary in Endorsement money.... same with Tiger Woods now....

I'd bet Teemu is on that level in Finland.... Wonder what Saku makes there.

Thats one of the reasons why Free Agents love to play in New York; endorsement possibility of playing for the Rangers are greater than other markets.

You'd think Montreal would offer lots of endorsement opportunities too... so should T.O.

the_speedster 07-30-2008 11:59 AM

explains why he's not in a rush to get back to the league....

100million... wow....wonder if he needs a son? ;)

That was one of the argument for Lecavalier to sign here... Before that huge deal he signed, anyways...

Yeah the taxes are bigger than pretty much everywhere, but a french-Canadian superstar in Montreal like him would have made 2x his salary in endorsement..

Really? Montreal definitely, but I don't see many big endorsement opportunities in Toronto. I don't remember Gilmour having many, and all Mats got was a silly soup commercial.

I think the big stars get the big endorsements no matter where they play.

Don't forget Sid The Kid. His salary is 9m but in reality he's probably making close to 20m per year (if not more) with all the endorsements from Reebok , Gatorade ect and since he's the poster boy of the NHL.

per game ? not bad ! that makes over 2 m$ per season :sarcasm:

Chelios looks like one of the main gansters in Batman. The guy that gets shot in the car.
